Looks like the results are in...

I have narrowing of the intervertebral disk spaces throughout my cervical spine, although they do not specify the degree so this could be minor and irrelevant. I have straightening of the normal cervical curve of the neck. Finally I have a herniated disk between C4 and C5. At least I know these are the likely cause of my problems, so from there I can get together with the neurologist and come up with a treatment plan. I do not think there will be a cure, but at least we can figure out some treatments to alleviate the pain and numbness.

Other than that all is the same as ever. Still not smoking though :)

una-g, exactly - nothing life threatening, and while not necessarily cureable something I can work with. Hopefully we will be able to come up with some pain management techniques/physiotherapy etc to help with the pain. I already know from experience that sitting is the worst, and standing up is the best for lessening the pain.

Basically, my arm pain is probably because the nerve is being compressed and so we can figure that out.

Ouch!! Good for you not smoking. So, do they think therapy will help? Ask about nerve blocks....even thou not sure if that would help in the lower back. The numbing could be from the disk problem or from a pinched nerve. Stay on top of this with your Drs. and do your homework BEFORE they do anything to you. Try to stay away from surgery if you can. That should be LAST RESORT!!!

I can tell you that no matter what you will have a problem for the rest of your life...no doubt about it....ppat

It may be clichéd, but you can take a glass half full or glass half empty approach to this Genes.

It could have turned out to be something much worse and I think that was on your mind in your earlier posts about this.

It would appear that this is something that can be managed in the long term.

You've gone through this and your finals without smoking which shows your inner strength, so I'm sure this won't deter you from continuing to live life to the max.

Good luck to you, you deserve it. :)

I am really not too upset as I would rather know what is causing the pain than not, plus you are right Capitan - I was far more worried about other possible causes earlier on.

It will be annoying at times I am sure, but I will figure it out. My OH has back problems - he has to fused lumbar vertebrae and two herniated lumbar disks that sometimes affect his walking, he is convinced I was jealous so herniated a disk on purpose!

We were joking earlier as the laundry room is upstairs - I could get there but could not get the clothes out, he could not get there but would have no problem with the clothes - our children suggested an elevator!

The only concern I have is with whether it will affect my ability to nurse, but I know early on, so if the worst comes to the worst I can specialize in an area with less lifting etc.

Thank you again for all the concern, it really is appreciated!

Given where your fears started, this looks like great news to me, Genes. I am so pleased to hear that it is nothing more serious.

These sorts of conditions can be managed - it can take a bit of time to make any necessary adjustments, but without doubt, life can and will go on. :)
