Summer time and non smoking

Hey Folks,

I have been thinking since the weather got a bit nicer lately. I am a bit worried about summer. When I think of the sun and holidays, I think of sitting on my balcony or at the pool with a giant cocktail and a ciggy, when I think about, it makes my stomach flip, knowing that there will be somthing missing from the picture! Anyone else nervous about this?

  • Yes Jill very! Going to Turkey in June for a 60th birthday my brother in laws. There will be 4 smokers and 4 non smokers (including me) This is going to be a real test for me. Have been away once this year but weather wasn't hot so had to go inside allot, so no smoking inside. But Turkey you can smoke anywhere I think! I used to also love the balcony coffee in morning cig, beer in afternoon cig, wine in evening cig, arrrrrrrrrgh! I'm just hoping I will feel ok then, I will be about 4 months quit I hope. Lets hope we can both get through it. x:o

  • I have every faith in both of you to come back with a dodgy looking donkey and no duty free cigs :D

    LOL Karri :D

I can understand the anxiety, but it really can be done. I did it when I went to Argentina for my xmas hols when I was 3 months into my quit. Despite being around family members that are confirmed smokers and the weather being lovely I didn't feel anything was missing! I think I read enough before I left to know that I didn't need a cigarette to enjoy all of those things I used to. And to be honest, it was pretty annoying sometimes when I was trying to enjoy the smell of summer and the breeze when suddenly I'd get a lung-full of smoke off someone else!

As long as you concentrate on the positives of not smoking rather than the perceived negatives you'll be fine :)

  • Think all of us, especially me associate cigarettes and having a good time!!

I freaked when it was my Birthday last week!!!

No cig on my Birthday !! to me = NO FUN. :(

Holidays, Christmas, ANY occasion without a cigarette seems like it's no fun. But I got through my Birthday and yes there maybe was something missing BUT I still had fun.

Holidays will be another hurdle but you'll look back and be SOOOO proud that you didn't smoke. AND you still had a fab time!

I think part of me uses 'an occasion' as an excuse, or I did. 'Oh, can't stop smoking yet 'cos it's Christmas, a wedding, a party. ANYTHING.' But you and everyone else CAN do it. There are good times without cigs!!!

    Good luck.

  • I completly agree ! I do miss sitting in a cafe NIRO terrace having an espresso and a ciggy and enjoying the sun!

I tried it yesterday without a ciggy but its not the same :-( and this is a fact because there are SOME good things about smoking hence thats why we been smokers for years.

on the reverse, the cost of enjoying them brief moments is too high when you remember the stinky smell, money, difficulty breathing, unable to exercise, discomfort at home and most importantly the incovenience of smoking.

  • I know what you mean about the reaxing by the pool bar/outside fag. But me I'm going to take the moral high-ground and sneer at all the smokers (in my head of course, I'd NEVER be so rude as to put it into words!!!:D) who can't smell the plants/sea/nice food smells etc.

I shall feel superior and sorry for them and in that way re-confirm to myself that i want to be a non-smoker cos it just plain betterer!:D

I'm just not a very nice person really!!

I disagree... there are some PERCEIVED good things about smoking... but the only thing that makes smoking feel so good having that relief of our addiction to it. The first fag never tasted good, we all had to 'learn' to smoke... We had to 'teach' outselves that it felt good. I think if you have to do that with something then it's probably not very good at all (especially when dealing with something that's slowly killing you... not something like eating veg :P)

    haha

I did this for sooo long in the beginning! and I still doing on the difficult days... If being superior in your head is what you have to do to not smoke then do it! Just maybe don't go on at your smoking friends about how you think they're "sad little addicts"... they could be quite hurt!

  • Thank you all, you are so right we can still enjoy. I am going to feel sorry for all the smokers and not be envious the smell really does turns me now. Going to sit by the non smokers, and look forward to the Holiday, we can do it Jill! xx:)

  • Thanks everyone,

I know you's are right :-/ I have got over a lot of hrdles with non smoking, birthdays, stress, alcohol etc. I know in my head yous are right, but I get a bit upset at the fact that I have to sacrifice my happiness. Arrgggghhh, I know smoking didnt make me happy but I LOVED the smell of smoke in the heat and thats not becasue I was an addict, my husband is a non smoker but loves the smell of fresh smoke too.

WHY CANT THEY MAKE A CIG THAT IS HEALTHY, FULL OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS BUT SMELLS THE SAME AND FEELS THE SAME.

Sorry guys, think I am having a weak day :(

Thanks for all your replies, I know I am just being silly.

Betty you are right, we will get through it, we have come this far!

    + several billion...

If you're bored one day for a nano-second sit down and list all the good things about smoking.

Just because your mind thinks a pint / latte is nicer with a smoke or what'll finish off this meal brilliantly is a big fag etc etc doesn't change a thing. Spending six minutes occasionally breathing smoke in and out rather than air does not improve coffee, relieve boredom, give your hands something to do or anything else no matter what we think. :(

You know what Austin, of all the things I've read on this site that probably clicks for me more than anything else. Well said!

  • You are right Austin, I know you are right, just wish there was somthing that makes me as satisifed as a cig did. Summer is a time where I am outside and there are always lots or opportunities to smoke, bbqs, walks etc. I will just have to pre-empt this and try and stay strong. Feeling wild sorry for myself today for having to stop!

    xx

I am feeling exactly the same and feeling like going out for a smoke as it is sunny outside and we have a massive park outside work where we usually smoke (very nice)!

jill.mcc, I am in the same state of mind, its not that I am craving but i just want to feel that moment again arghhhhhh.......shame it costs too much and its unhealthy and stinks afterwards.

keep up the good work as there is nothing wrong in fantasising lol

  • Austin - completely agree

Dale (we are nearly at 2 months!!) I am so with you. Whenever I am out and about, I watch smokers and pity them, they never look bloody happy. At luchtime today there was a chap outside a shop, I could hear him wheezing as he lit up, another took about 10 puffs in 10 secs before boarding a bus !!

I have a cold at the mo and cant believe I would normally make my lungs suffer smoke on top of feeling ill, madness.

So high ground it is for me too - keeps me postive and on top of my quit :D

  • I really believe we "fooled" ourselves for years. In my mind there is nothing good about smoking - it tastes like a camels danglers, it does awful things to your body, it ruins the taste of a great meal and I could go on and on an on. If it was a man/woman we would have left the relationship as soon as it got off the ground. We wouldn't let anyone treat us like a cigarette does :(

camels danglers - lol Karri :D

  • Not at all, just think of all the summers you will miss if you keep smoking!

Camels danglers. I sense a scandal.. Come on young Karri tell all.... Who is this Camels and how come you know what his danglers taste like?!!!:D

  • Thanks everyone, feeling a good bit better today.

Was thinking more about it last night and how silly is it to think that a paper stick containing a plant extract and lots of stupid chemicals could make me have a good time on holiday. As already said, think of the extra holidays I will have in the future being a healthy old person. You guys are great, you's never fail to calm my quit nerves and make me feel better.
