Hi everyone,

Sorry for the urgency however i really need some advice.

I have been taking champix for 10 weeks and have been smokefree for 8 weeks.

When i first started on the champix i had nausea but that soon passed, however over the last month i have been getting more and more constipated and without going to much into it.

I cannot go to the toilet and i have tried many things prune juice, more fibre, senna tablets and still nothing.

Yesterday as i havent been for ages i had an accident lucky for me i was at home.

So i have reduced the champix tablets to one aday but yesterday after this i felt so fed up i thought i might as well be smoking.

As i didnt have these problems and now i am nervous about going out incase it happens in public.

I really dont know what to do and wondered if this has any thing to do with the champix, stopping smoking or something else.

any advice would be appricated

hi pumpkin

I looked around online, and it seems that constipation is a side effect both of quitting smoking and of champix. Now that I think about it, I've had a bit of the same but obviously not as bad as you as it hasn't driven me to post on the internet :)

My advice is go talk to your GP. Maybe they can give you something stronger than the over the counter stuff or something. Certainly smoking is not the answer. You've lasted 8 weeks that's really great! Keep it up you can do it.

Champix side effects

Hi there

As posted elsewhere I came to this forum this morning looking for info on Champix side effects - my own are back and chest pain, aching muscles and headache since increasing to 1mg twice a day.

I agree with asking the doctor about extra help to relieve constipation, also try the pharmacist. You may also like to try drinking loads of water (keep a plastic bottle with you at all times and keep it filled) and taking exercise if you can - whatever takes your fancy, a good long walk or jumping up and down to your favourite dance tune. High fibre foods just sit there unless they're flushed through and jiggled about! Senna can also cause bad griping pains, there are much gentler methods out there.

Good luck and glad to hear you're doing so well not smoking. My quit day is tomorrow. Would welcome any support.

Hi I am not sure that I am the one too answer this but here goes, Constipation what not is a very widespread side effect of quit, eat more fruit and veg and fibre and the absolute essential thing to do is drink the right amout of fluid for your weight.

One fluid ounce for every pound of body weight for you.

And cut down on the caffine and check out some multi vits and relax things will get back to normal I promise, if it gets no better take some lactulose from chemist (if that doesnt clear it see the doc) I took it one teaspoon a day for week to get me errr moving LOL sorry for that.

I'm on Champix and liquorice works for me :) Mum says Cod liver oil and malt also works.

I didn't take Champix but also suffered on the movement front. If I recall it lasted 3 or 4 weeks. I found ensuring I had a 'proper' breakfast consisting of a small bowl of serial (bran and alpen), some fruit, a slice of brown toast a and orange juice helped no end. It sounds a lot but portions weren't large.

Also nibbling throughout the day seemed to help; veggie munchies etc. I really hit the fresh fruit and veg during this period and that's what seemingly helped.

I have got constipation on champix too! All good advice here. Could also be worth a chat to the doc about it. Miserable for you. Sending good vibes
