Managing nausea with Champix - any ideas?

Hi everyone. I've been reading the forums and this is the most motivating site I have found - thank you all for that :)

I am taking Champix - now on day 2 of not smoking and really pleased to find i don't want to smoke - ever again! The Champix has certainly made a huge difference to previous attempts at quitting. My only problem is the nausea with the morning tablet - I've tried taking it before, during and after eating and taking it with loads to drink, but so far haven't found a solution. Almost as soon as I've taken it I start feeling sick to the point of almost being sick - unfortunately it lasts for several hours and is interfering with getting on with my day. I take the evening dose at bedtime and have no probs with that.

I'm loathe to decrease the dose so early on, I'm not looking for an excuse to stop taking it and go back to smoking but could really do with some advise if anybody has any ideas.

And thanks again for your inspiring posts

Hi Lou

Well done on day 2. Champix really is amazing and I am sorry you are feeling so poorly.

I also had terrible sickness with morning tab as soon as I went onto the blus...For the first coupe of weeks I managed by eating half a bowl of porridge, taking tab with large glass of water and drinking all the water, then immediately finishing the porridge. It did help and make the day bearable just..

However, after two weeks I gave up on the am tab, I thought about cutting it in half but advised not to something about the coating, and just had the evening tab at about 5pm...I did not notice any great difference to be honest. I gave up on the tabs after about 5 weeks altogether...

If you read around the one thing you will see is we all have differing experiences.

BUT, 41/2 months in I can honestly say all the sickness and more was so worth it and it does get better....stick with it and it will test you at times but be strong, read and post, read and post many of us have found it invaluable.

Good luck

xx

Thanks to you both for the replies. I am determined not to let this beat me and will persevere...I'll try your suggestions.

Champix really is amazing - I've tried NRT but felt sooo different to this.

I see my smoking advisor on Tuesday so will also see what she has to say.

Hello Nicolajane, I would consider yourself lucky. Although I first started on Champix but only for a week I had no side effects. I did not feel it was stopping me from smoking although I stopped in that first week so maybe it did. I don't think they are meant to stop you smoking in the first few days I think they are meant to take away the craving to smoke once you have picked your stopping day and stop. I believe it is something to do with receptors in your brain, sorry don't know the scientific reasons but only know many people have stopped using Champix.

TAKE WITH FOOD! Take your tab half way through your morning meal, that helps.

Put Champix into the search function here and you will see that many have suffered digestive problems and many more have solutions.

Take with food :)

I found I could take the night time tab on nothing, but the morning tab required food with it.

Better late than never..

Hey all, I am new to the forum... and a 3 time Champix user. A little info i wanted to share about the sick, nauseated feeling that champix can give you. In some cases, it may not even be the champix at all.... Speaking from experience, my first 2 rounds on champix weren't too bad, until day 1 of no cigs at all. The nausea was actually a withdraw symptom, having completely deprived my body of any nicotine fixes (smoking). I was advised by my doctor that I could use nicotine patches along with Champix to keep the nausea and headaches at bay. Step 3 patches (lowest dosage of nicotine) was the recommendation. I tried it for 1 day.. it DID help, which indicated to me that it was exactly what my body wanted.... but then i thought.... i am using Champix to get over the urge to smoke.. or "the craving".. but i didn't see a point in overcoming nicotine addiction, if i was just going to continue to feed my body nicotine through alternative methods (patches). It seemed a bit counter-productive.

This is my 3rd attempt at quitting with Champix, and tomorrow, will be day 1 of no cigs and i already have been feeling like crap for 3 days now. IDK if my body knows what's coming, or maybe the decrease in nicotine intake, or maybe it really IS the champix... but it seems to get worse when i drink Coke Zero...or better right after i eat.. which makes me want to eat all the time... go figure.

A little experimenting has led me to stop drinking the cola beverage, and make a conscious effort to not eat all the time to appease the nausea... Just some food for thought.

Day 1

A.M. pill: I feel so sick; kinda like major food poisoning.

P.M pill: Not so bad. If I ignore it long enough it'll go away.

This is my second attempt on Champex. My first was defeated by morning sickness. The other day I was in such bad shape I had to call into work and miss the day. Two possible solutions occur. One: minimize effect by cutting pill and spreading the intake over time. Two, better and easier by far, take the pill before getting up in the morning.

I've got an alarm clock that I can set to go off at two different times. I've set the first alarm at about an hour and a half hours before I actually need to get up. My morning pill is placed right beside the snooze button and water's within reach. Easy, peesy. I wake up and all is good. If I was feeling sick, well, by-golly, I've slept right through it and didn't feel a thing.

Just interesting. Anyone note a diminished taste for alcohol as well?

Day 8 of Champix and day 1 of not smoking - nausea is manageable but not pleasant so hoping it doesn't last for the whole course.

Yes, I also noticed that I'm kind of off alcohol and I like a glass of wine most nights - suppose not drinking won't do the waistline any harm especially if I start nibbling to substitute the ciggies !

Crazy dreams (not scary) which leave me exhausted by morning - they're like feature length films, they last all night !!

Hi I didn't quit with champix I used NRT patches for 7 weeks and I when off any forms ov alcohol.. On a normal weekend i cod easly drink a few bottles ov rose or a bottle ov vodka.. But when I was on NRT I think I could only manage a few glasses of wine. And tasted funny.. But now I don't take any NRT I'm okay with drinking again.. So maybe it's something to do withquitting not just champix

5 weeks smoke free on Champix

Hi all

I have been a smoker for 25 years and have finally quit with the help of champix!! At first I was dubious as to how this could work and after reading the reviews saying mental health & suicidal thoughts were common side affects! All I can say to that is ! RUBBISH... These tablets are amazing! I was the type of smoker who lit a cigarette before I was completely wakened and smoked a pack a day! I feel like a new woman now that I've finally quit!! Only thing I'm struggling with is I can't stop thinking about cigarettes! But my way to deal with that is focus on the new things I can now buy now that I am not frittering my money away on costly cigs!!

Heres to a smoke free future for me & my family!!

Well done Isobel!!!

I too am a great fan of Champix - I really don't think I could have done it without them.

I too have thoughts of cigs but that's all they are - thoughts.

I have the opposite issue, while bad, I can still handle the morning tablet. The evening tablet however messes with me, to the point of actually being sick at times. I have been falling asleep on the lounge at like 7:30 each night because I take the tablet with my dinner.

I have also found a lack of interest in alcohol :(

Hi I'm on week 5 of my quit and week 7 of Champix. I have had to cut back on the dose 2 weeks ago because I was so nauseous and lost my appetite. All I wanted to do was drink orange juice, which I hardly ever have normally, and go to sleep for hours in the day. All tea tastes horrible and I've tried several types as I did love a cup of tea. I've gone off chocolate and I did expect to turn to that. I hardly ever drink alcohol anyway, but the very thought of it makes me want to heave.

The nausea has not been so bad on the reduced dose, but my appetite still not what it was. Still, I do not fancy a cigarette either, so it is definitely working :)

sickness

I am on week 3 of the Champix and 12 days of no cigarettes. This is my 2nd time around with the Champix I managed 6 months of no smoking, been a smoker for 28 years. The weird dreams i can deal with not much you can do about that, I have been more tired this time round but that could be down to my Diabetes playing up but the sickness, I couldn't remember how I managed last time round with it if I took it before or after food so was trial and error again. 1st day I took it before food had my head down the toilet with in 5 minutes, the evening tablet i took with my main meal was ok it was just the morning tablet that effected me that way. Then started I taking the morning tablet with something in my stomach even if it was just a slice of toast it seems to help, im not a breakfast person so having something to eat after waking up is difficult for me but im forcing myself to eat. This time round im not getting any cravings or urges no constantly eating I had to have a bag of lollipops last time and would have 1 of them when i felt the urge I still get the odd bouts of sickness and they come on so quickly and could be anything from 5 mins after taking the tablet to 2 hrs I wouldn't even feel sick I would just get the watering mouth then have to run. So far in the 3 weeks of taking Champix i have only been sick twice I hit week 4 in 2 days

Nausea

I am also feeling the very bad nausea in the morning, made me think of stopping the Champix. It is really bad and also affecting my work as I feel like just going to my room and putting my finger down my throat....EVERY morning.

I also find that I do not feel like having alcohol, very weird!!!! That don't matter really anyway, quitting smoking is of much more importance to me now. Just this nausea :-(

:(A.M. pill: I feel so sick; kinda like major food poisoning.

P.M pill: Not so bad. If I ignore it long enough it'll go away.

Try cutting down the dose (you can cut the tablets in half). I did this because I was starting to be badly affected by excess anxiety. The excess anxiety went away and yet I still received the "I don't feel like smoking" effect of Champix - with a mild craving that went away after a few days.

Also, the usual advice with Champix applies: If in doubt, speak to your GP.

Hi I was really sick even on low dose an was actually sick like projectile puke on the higher dose.. I thought id have to stop as the only thing i could do was go to bed.

However Ive started having 2 gingernut biscuits straight away in the morning then the tablet..little bit of water an another biscuit.. then chewing gum.

Not been sick since ..some smells make my tummy turn but nowhere near as bad as before.

yep thats normal, i read somewhere that champix was originally designed to stop drinking, i found i drank very rarley from 2 glasses a night to about 1 glass a week. As for the sickness it made me stop taking champix by week 5, it was a little rough about a week after once they had left my system but frankly the thought having chemo or something and feeling worse (As the memory was very fresh) than they made me feel helped, and this place has really helped
