Well here goes,, you know I dont remember at what point i got hooked on cigs, but i got hooked, and been smoking for the last 10 years or so. I have just recently quit cause it wasn't helping my sinus allergy and i started getting bad gum disease.
The funny thing now as these cravings come and go is this, what exactly did smoking do for me.. i convince myself that during periods of boredom it helped me, but i spent nearly 20 years of my first period of my life without cigs, does that mean i was never bored than..
What did smoking solve, i would say i am stressed and have a cig, but did my problem go away, nope,, I would say I needed some time to think about things,, did it actually do anything nope..
All smoking gave me, was breathlessness, lethargy, colds, coughs, and so many other bad things, and after 2 weeks of quitting my mind is still thinking about it. WHY?
My mind even a few minutes ago was trying to tell me i need 1, all i can say to it is go f*** yourself,, i am not smoking until i lose all my senses, simple,, my mind will and should accept that,,
You know the funny thing in another 100 years, people are going to look back and say How the hell were people so stupid to ever smoke,,
You know the previous generation did not have the information about how bad smoking is as we have, so for me to continue smoking will be just incredibly dumb and you know the bs i used to think at 20 about how i dont wanna live till I am 70 or 80 well, is it better to live till than or live till 50 and suffer for 5 years, no I dont want that suffering, I dont wanna think of oxygen tubes sticking out of my throat, i dont want to see pity on peoples faces, I dont wanna be dependent on anyone,, therefore i will never smoke and thats a promise not to you or anyone, its to myself..
If you can take care of yourself, than you are fit to take care of others..
Just thought I would share my thoughts about quitting smoking,, thanks

What a good post and very true as well a fag makes nothing better and it helps nothing not one single solitary thing
After 2 weeks yes you still think about them but you know full well they do nothing for you and that is good and will help you win this battle we all fight for freedom
You're right when you say previous generations didn't know how bad it was for them
When I started smoking over 50 years ago [I'm just a few weeks off being 67] and have been quit for almost 15 months we were actively encouraged to smoke by the Government, Doctors anyone you can think of they all encouraged it
We were told it was good for us, it would help us in our work, it would make life more enjoyable, we wouldn't suffer from tension [stress] as they call it now, it would help us relax you name it and smoking would cure it what a load of old cobblers as we now know of course
The list of reasons to smoke was as long as the one given now for not smoking
If you didn't smoke back then people looked at you as if you were mad, if you didn't smoke you weren't one of the in crowd in fact you were often looked down on much as smokers are now looked down on by some
I smoked for over 50 years and tried many times to stop until I managed it finally in 2008
I can honestly say I am much healthier now than I have been for most of my life I was one of the lucky ones smoking all that time hasn't caused me any serious illness, for that I am thankful but I wasted so much time and money smoking that now it makes me sad and at times angry

Marg
Hi Margaret, yes i agree those were the times when not much was known about smoking, and i feel sorry for all those people such as yourself and others who started smoking than, if drugs like cocainea nd heroin are banned, i would say go ahead and ban tobacco cause i dont think i have faced anything more difficult than giving up smoking, even the kidney stone i had wasnt bad (touchwood), the pain went away, thats the physical pain, with smoking its all in the mind. I am glad to see you have been successful and going to get hope from people like yourself and others to be true to myself..
There are no reasons to smoke. Well said. And you're right, you need to stop for yourself.
Thanks Elaine, yes i mean its like we have have kids and we tell them this is not good for you etc etc, while we indulge in the most dangerous thing,, smoking,,,best time to quit..
Wot a brilliant post mate, full of attitude x so many reasons why we shouldnt smoke & not one single reason why we should just that we want 1... too right Ryan definetely not a good enough reason. keep the fight going & well done on ure quit x
Great post Ryan, and something we used to ignore as smokers, until we couldn't turn a blind eye to it anymore, and here we are.
Someone I know said to me when hearing that i've stopped, that "smoking wasn't the sort of thing grown ups did any more". I thought at the time it was a strange thing to say, but since the smoking ban I didn't feel comfortable smoking anywhere other than in the privacy of my back garden, I did feel like a bit of a leper. When I look about the only people it seems who look truly relaxed are the happy-go-lucky younger generation who haven't yet given it much thought, I used to envy them when I smoked cos they looked so relaxed and seemed to really be enjoying it, which wasn't the way I felt.
Thanks once again Ryan for getting me thinking about it.
only thing i don't like is the title of the thread
Hi Jase, theres a very good reason i named that, its like when the cravings come,my mind is trying to convince myself that smoking is great,, but than i start to reason with myself that it has done nothing for me other than
1. Make me spend money
2. Be more anxious, i mean along with real anxieties about life, i used to be anxious, what if there is no cigarret for tomorrow, or I dont have any now,,
3. Be sick, cough,
4. Have no stamina,
I can go on and on,, thats why i thought ok let me post here with that thought in mind that smoking is completely the opposite of great..
