I cannot see a future with me smoking the way i do right now - any attempt at cutting down eventually fails miserably. My breathing is suffering and as a result my fitness in general suffers. I can't see how much longer i can carry on like this. I have lots of things i want to do in life and at some point i know i have to stop.

I keep telling myself, it will be easier if i leave it six months. And that six months never really comes around as it seems to be true that there is never a good time to give up. Yes i would rather quit the beginning of next year - or maybe in Spring. Oh but then i want a cigarette in the sunshine in Summer - and then it's the next year, and then the next. Oh and that event in a few months time, it would be nice to smoke then too. Oh and when i travel it would be nice then. The good time to quit just never comes and for me it just does not seem a habit i can keep going which is why i want to quit. I'm a nicotine addict.

Well my pleading won, i am here, I have quit for almost 2 months now & i can honestly say from the bottom of my heart that if i can do it then so can you

good luck, it is possible & you will actually surprise yourself

well done for taking youre first step

Thanks all of you for the help and advice. I have a problem in that a family member smokes and when i have quit before i find myself a bit annoyed with their smoking and hoping they would quit but i know deep down it is their decision to smoke or not smoke. Getting annoyed with myself about this has caused me to get stressed and smoke again.

Hi Green,

Yup, we've all put off quitting because its nice to smoke in the sun, theres a party next week, a holiday is comming up, etc etc, but you know the truth already, as I did. Your breathing is suffering, you fell miserable, same as I did.

The fact is though, its an addiction, and believe me, you will enjoy life more once you quit, once you gain more energy, feel more refreshed, once your breathing is better.

Tomorrow would be a good time to quit, but then again, its bank holiday weekend, then there will be another excuse.

Actually, thats a bit harsh, in all seriousness, I would go for Tuesday if I was you. Put it off any longer, and your'll be telling yourself theres no point quitting as xmas is comming up.

When you do decide to quit though, i'll be waiting along with the others offering help and support.

Can't help with the family member though, my wife is having a sneaky one a day fag, and I know its annoying, but its their choice.

hey greenfingers,

good decision to quit, a hard one to overcome but you've come to the right place to do it! Its hard quitting when others around you are still smoking, tomorrow I'll be posting on here for the new Day 1 of my quit and i've vowed to stay clear of friends that smoke until I can overcome the urge to join them in the smoking areas!

Does the family member smoke inside the house? Taking a walk when they do might be an idea to help overcome this, a bit of fresh air and stretching the old legs to help bring the physical fitness back up is never a bad idea

Good luck.

Alex

Hi Greenfingers.....I agree with what everyone else has written here...can I just offer a little suggestion .....read all the links on here....and read everyones stories and read and read and read....It helped me to really make up my mind....I was a lot like you and my hubbie smokes as well...( he has been on patches for 3 days now) I think my giving up has had a good effect on him.....so just take it one day at a time and the very best of luck to you....Cheers Kez.

Hello, thanks again everyone. I will look at the links properly over the coming days - to be honest they would get me down at the moment as i am at a low ebb from the cigarettes as it is with the addiction side of it.

Yes it's my Father who smokes so not in the same house - i guess yes ultimately it is his choice. I just don't want to be sanctimonious about it with him and try and be a bit more libertarian about it.

This bank holiday i will clear all the fag packets and butts. It's true there is never a good time to stop but there are better times surely as quitting now unprepared with all the ashtrays and butts and packets would be very hard for me.

Take care all and i look forward to chatting soon.
