..............for a nicotine addict will only ever be one puff away. And because we are all nicotine addicts that's the way it will always be.

I stopped smoking on th 11th of April this year after 21 years and countless times trying to stop smoking.

And i'm never going back:D

I thought it was just about stopping smoking. How wrong was I? If you think it's simply about stopping smoking then statistically you have near to zero chance of stopping. You'll try a million times and get nowhere.

Imagine a nicotine forest that you are living in. At all times there is a clear straight path out of this nicotine forest. But imagine that clear straight line out being surrounded on all sides by miles and miles of nicotine forest as far as the addicted eye can see. One sneeze, daydream, nudge or even just by forgetting you are a nicotine addict and you will most definitely veer over the line from the path to freedom and you will be right back into the midst of the very same nicotine forest you want to flee from.

I tried to stop smoking so many times and failed. We'r talking hundreds of times. This time there is a difference. The person who drove me out of the forest on all those failed attempts isn't in charge of the escape vehicle any more. I had to get the driver to have a brain transplant. I now have a new brain. Knowledge is the key, not effort.

I now see how addicted I was to nicotine and how this addiction was killing me. I now appreciate how strong the addicted mind is. I know what needs to done in order to get free. This time 3 weeks ago I was a hopeless addicted chain smoker. I couldn't get free. I now know why. I'm now on 7mg of patch. I'm weaning myself down to zero and it's going great. The knowledge I have learned is what is keeping me from giving in to the part of my brain that is addicted to nicotine and i am nerver smoking again. People who know me don't believe me yet. Time will show them that I have done it and that any one hopelessly addicted to nicotine can do it. Like all of the successful quitters connected to this wonderful site you have to gain the knowledge to set you free.

Number 1- choose to stop smoking

Number 2- un addict urself to nicotine whichever way suits you

Number 3- remain a happy exsmoker the rest of your life

It can be done. Any heavy chainsmoker can do it with the right information.

Knowledge will set you free.

Wow, cool , welcome to the forums!

Congrats on yr decision.

I hope your plan works out

It seems that there are many ways to quit :)

In my case, action, is what saves the day.

Knowledge is powerful and super important, but ultimately knowledge did not

stop me from smoking again.

Knowledge of health risks and awareness of the strange mental twist (addiction)

that lead me back to smoking did'nt either

However, in my experience of staying stopped, (limited as it may be)

reading /listening to "allen carrs easy way to stop smoking"

shows the willing to stop smoker to a state of mind that makes it enjoyable

to stop. freaky but true

After that, I have found going out of my way to be of service to other willing

to stop smokers keeps me stopped and happy.

Similar to how alcoholics & other drug addicts can stay clean by helping

others like themselves

I love being a non-smoker!

All the best & good luck

I am confused! Did you smoke John? And are back to day 1? Or are you still quit from the original quit.

Reddlyon, good to see you still posting. You are the person that originally set my mindset on my firstday of quitting and posting on this thread. To put it in the context of an alchoholic, to become quit mentally then keep quit by helping others, worked in my head. For that I am eternally gratefull. Nearly three months quit. Thank you. x
