A little advice...

Hi

I put out my last cigarette at 11.45pm on 31/12/2008 and haven't had one since. After 6 years of an easy 15-20 a day (sometimes more on a particularly rowdy night out!!) I'm really quite proud of myself for going cold turkey for almost 3 months! I haven't had any cravings for about 2 months now and I'm quite happy not smoking but I have noticed that I've put on quite alot of weight and it's making me feel really down. I've tried eating more fruit and salads and cutting out snacks but nothing seems to be making any difference. If anything I feel heavier! Has anybody else had this side effect and if so what did you do about it to keep the weight from piling on? Any tips would be gratefully received!

Thanks everyone!

Hi There!!

first of all well done with your quit-thats great

I have stopped for just over 6 months-put 10llbs on!!! felt really bloated. I eat very healthy anyway-lots of fish, salads, seeds ect!! it is known that your metabolism drops when you stop smoking (smoking increases your metabolic rate)

So i joined a gym-one of my treats with the money saved!! and i am now back to my 8 stone 2llbs self, due to gym work but also my metabolic rate has settled to the norm-i suspect!!

so don't get too down-you have nice clean lungs now!! so use them and do some exercise-it will make you realise the benefits of not smoking!!!!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Well the metabolism slows when you quit smoking but does seem to sort itself out a bit after 6 months so you may find the weight a little easier to deal with in a couple of months!

Since a higher ratio of muscle in the body speeds up the metabolism exercise especially with weights will help, remember its a lot healthier to be a little heavier than to smoke. The stress on your heart of smoking one pack of cigarettes per day is equal to being 90 pounds overweight!

Good luck with it.

Nic

Thanks very much, not that I'd doubted it in the first place but it's nice to know I'm not the only one it's happened to! I feel so much better not smoking on the whole but I'm starting to really dislike the bloated feeling 24/7. Actimel is starting to look like a very promising prospect.

I've been swimming every other day and that doesn't seem to be helping either, apart from making me feel worn out. Hopefully it will get better in a few months like you said.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi Miss Miller :D

Welcome to the forum a great place for help and advice well done on 3 months quit

I also had that bloated feeling 24/7 but it has mostly gone now thank goodness

I use Actimel every day once and sometimes twice, did you know that it also boosts your immune system I was put on it while in hospital on antibiotics for 4 weeks that's what the consultant said & what I did find is it works at least for me have only had one cold all winter since starting tem again

All the Best
