Hi all,

Well after too many attempts to mention am quitting today. Read all the websites recommended on here. I think, if I'm totally honest, I'm scared to quit (hence the username!) - scared I fail again, scared of how I'll feel when I do quit, scared of what could happen to me if I don't stop smoking. Am sick of being scared, it can't go on!

Been trying patches the past couple of weeks but it's just not working. So the past few days I've been reading, absorbing it all and thinking about smoking and me. I just want the nicotine out my system asap (I've tried seriously quitting a few times, with and without NRT), and am training my brain to adopt the "one day at a time" approach. I've got a free weekend, an empty diary next week so I can please myself. Stay in bed all day tomorrow if need be, and spend every evening after work at the gym if I want.

I'll post on here, which will be lovely as I know from reading the other posts that we all share/can empathise with the bonkers thoughts we have when trying to quit. And if I get an uncontrollable urge to smoke, I'll remind myself that if smoking is so damn great, then why do I spend so much time wanting to quit???

I can't wait to feel free, to not have that nagging feeling of always "needing" something. To not hurry home from evenings out etc so I can smoke in peace. To not have my happiness depend on an addictive substance. To feel calmer and less stressed. To have more patience.....

Hope you are all doing really well today, and are looking forward to a Spring of complete and utter freedom. I know I am!

Hi ScaredyCat :)

Don't be scared there is no reason to be I promise I also tried loads of times before this quit but it never worked patches didn't work for me either but thid time I used Champix and Wallah as they say the rest is history as you probably know the nicotine leaves your system after just three days

I know you have been reading but have a read of this anyway it may help and you have nothing to lose and everything to gain

Welcome to the forum and well done on the decision to quit possibly one of the most important you will ever make and you will be losing nothing but you will regain control of your life and that has to be good

You will find all the help and support you need on here as we all help each other just like a family we are here for you every step of the way cheering the good days and sympathiseing with the bad but the good far outweigh the bad

Read the posts on here you will find a lot of tips and advice and in the signatures of a lot you will find links to other sites just click on them Here are 2 I find very good to start you off whyquit.com and woofmang.com Read, read and then read some more as the more you read and learn about why you smoked and about your addiction the easier your quit will be

Good Luck

Marg

Hi ScaredyCat

Welcome,

Fear was a big factor for me too. Can't tell you how many times I tried to quit - it's actually embarrassing and I never got passed day 1 or 2 because of fear, and then became a secret smoker several times due to the fear of facing my fear (does that sound like you?)

I have finally quit with the aid of Champix the wonder drug and have been fear and smoke free for 6 and a half months. I can tell you it feels wonderful.

GO FOR IT

Bernie

Ah thanks you two. Yes, am a little scared but raring to go...!

Bernie, I have been exactly the same. Secretly smoking for a few weeks now....everyone thought I'd quit but like you I couldn't make it past Day 1 or 2.

Not this time though! I can't wait to feel like you do..

Hiya ScaredyCat,

Fear is what keeps most of us trapped in bad habits..... fear of how things will go, how we will feel, fear of the unknown..... well, many of us felt EXACTLY like you and we managed and we feel much better for now for braving the fear. You can do this...... but maybe you need a little something.... if not nrt, maybe champix, or something else..... you have to know where YOU need support..... I personally had major panic attacks for the first few days (knowing from past quits) and always like you got stuck then.... so I talked to the doc and he gave me something for that (kind of like Valium). Just giving you that example to show you there are many, many ways to do this successfully..... you just have to figure out YOUR way! Each fail will teach you that way! Good luck and welcome!!

Hi, Scaredy Cat. My biggest problem about quitting was fear also. I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do with myself. Spent so much time smoking, what was I going to do with all that free time. When I quit, I never had a problem with finding things to fill my time. I was afraid I would gain weight. Well, I did, but I'm sure I can take it off. If I can quit smoking then I figure I should have the will power to watch what food I eat! I was afraid I would fail. My husband quit smoking 36 years ago and for about 10 years after was on my case to quit. I was afraid of what he would say if I failed. Finally decided it didn't matter, this was my thing and I didn't care what anyone thought or said! Fear kept me a smoker for 35 years! Freedom of fear will keep me smoke free for the rest of my life!

That is so true, about fear keeping us smoking. And about having freedom of fear - what a lovely feeling. I had a great day, spent with a friend who gave up smoking a couple of years and her wee boy.

Normally I'd be leaving early, panicking cos I wanted to just get home for a ciggie but I knew they weren't here waiting for me. And it felt great! So am looking forward to day 2 rather than dreading it.

Thanks for all your messages of support!

I know what you mean! One of my biggest reasons for quitting..... we have moments of withdrawal ALL THE TIME while smoking..... we walk through life in withdrawal.... so be finished with the smokes and you will start feeling so good..... I catch myself when I leave somewhere, paying attention to my body.... I look for that feeling that I was so used to making me rush to get a smoke.... that feeling is gone. Feels good :D
