Is this common?

Hi,

I quit smoking on the 21st October 2007.

The one thing that worries me is that I have not coughed up any horrible flemmy stuff - non at all.

Every few weeks or so I can feel a tightness in my chest as if it is congested, has anyone else had this experience?

Kind regards, Jen

I'm no expert, but...

Hi Jen,

If you've been quit this long it seems very unlikely that there's simply some sort of blockage stopping stuff coming up.

How much was down there depends on lots of things...Lifestyle, environment, age, smoking habit..everyone is unique.

In the absence of anything else to indicate that you're not well, I would just let it go - and it's great that your system was coping so well with the tar!

When I smoked I had the most disgusting cough with bucketsfull of phlegm

That went away after only about one week - and I did not experience the lung-clearing thing either

I would, however, get the chest pain checked out, just to be on the safe side

Well done on your quit btw :)

it is very normal for your chest to feel tight for a while in the early stages of your quit

some people cough up a lot of nasty stuff and some epople may not feel they are coughing up any, you may well be draining while you sleep

if it becomes very tight in your chest do check it out with your doctor as the nasty stuff can turn into an infection :)
