Braces...............

I would like to give my reason for quitting. None of the usual reasons people use seemed to have any effect on me. My Uncle died of throat cancer, didn't stop,

My mother in law died of Lung cancer - did't stop either. My dearest aunt has just suffered a heart attack - yet I still puff away. UNTIL I get a letter from the orthodontist (big word) telling me my daughter (shes 13) has to wear braces to straighten her teeth . No matter how hard we (hubby and me) try to explain that although it might be a bit unpleasant in the short term - it will be worth it as she will gain perfect straight teeth in the end. Well you guessed it she was having NONE of it!! Then it struck me,here I was trying to persuade her to put up with a little discomfort for a while to gain a great benefit and here I was,not prepared to put up with a discomfort for a shorter time in order to gain freedom from fags! Talk about hypocrite!!!!

So I made a pact with her (cos I may not have the greatest willpower in the world but I would like to think I am an ok Mum!) I have said that I will quit smoking the day she has her braces fitted(Weds 3 oct 9.50am) so as to support her. Not the most common of reasons I realise but hey this will work!:) I am on Day 1 of champix.

Karen,

Well done on making that so important decision to quit smoking.

first of all i was a 30 a day smoker the sought of smoker who grabbed his fags as soon as the alarm went off in the morning, then the kettle was on then another fag.

just thinking about work i had to have another.

I was the person to have 2 fags at break time at work one after the other.

I was the person who people said he will never quit.

The way i focused on my quit was

the more addicted i was the more i had to gain.

good luck

Andy

Hi Karen,

I think the way you handled the braces was marvelous. That is a good way to ensure you quit. I did that when my son was small. If I told him I would do something I would move heaven and earth to make sure it was done. Never wanted to be a mom that wasn't true to her word. Am stil that way but he's 25 now and I don't have to make such promises. Today starts day 8 for me of no smoking on chantix. I am still coughing up some nasty stuff but that's ok...I can breathe.

Good luck!

Andy! I am proud of you, you have done wonderful! I was your kinda smoker so you can be my inspirition if you don't mind.

Hi Karen and welcome :D

Have to say that I can relate to what Andy is saying about his life as a smoker! I have just about made it through my first non smoking week using champix. There's lots of info about it here and should you be unlucky enough to suffer any side effects there's help at hand.

Personally, I know I wouldn't have got this far without this drug but have been very lucky as so far I've only suffered from the nausea after taking the tablet and very occasional sickness.

GOOD LUCK and stay close to the forum .. the kindness and support here makes all the difference.

Take care

Ali xx
