Thank you for accepting me into this group.

I was stage 3 for 9 years, always stayed at that until 18 months ago when it dropped to 30 right down to 23, stage 4. Had a pre op for tkr but obviously couldn’t have it done, still haven’t had it done, I am now at border egfr 30, just back in stage 4. Only thing I can recall that may have affected kidneys were a solution you take before a sigmoidoscopy, I have forgotten name of it but remember being very uncomfortable and stomach swollen. It was 7 hours later before I began going to toilet which meant I was up all night. I have asked my GP what solution I was given but he said he didn’t know. I will have to have another sigmoidoscopy as I’m prone to polyps and need to know what solution I was given last time.

Hi Doglover,

Before you have the other test, make sure your doctor is aware of the kidney issues and make sure the contrast they give you is kidney friendly.

Getting off red meat is a good thing. But then substituting chicken is good, but you still have to watch you protein intake. 100 grams of chopped chicken breast has 31 grams of protein. When you tally all you eat in a day, it is very easy to eat too much protein because almost everything has protein in it. My dietician told me to eat around 60 grams a day. Seems like a lot, but when one small amount of chicken is over half of that, it is easy to go over. What I do if I have a meal with a lot of protein or a day with more animal protein in it, the next day I skip and eat only veggies and a bit of cheese. Animal protein is harder on the kidney in general than plant protein.

My Gastro Doctor makes adjustments for prep and colonoscopy procedure due to CKD.

Did you have to drink a gallon of fluid? That is a pretty standard prep solution and is used a lot of the time.

I was given a different solution for prep, and took linzess. I did not have to drink a gallon of water to complete the prep.

There is no contrast used in a sigmoidoscopy. The prepping for one is harmless to kidneys as it is not absorbed rather just moves through the gut. GoLightly is what I've used even as a dialysis person. Blessings

There is a whole separate solution preparation which may be more appropriate for someone at your level of kidney function for a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Ask your physician!!!!

It is common if they are not aware of your CKD, to give you Mag Citrate to drink as a prep for a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. The magnesium can be harmful to your kidneys. There are alternatives that are more kidney friendly. Makes sure your GI doctor is aware.
