How much fat?

I know that you need some fat to absorb vitamins, but how many grams per day? I have been feeling very tired, and think that it may be due to an extremely low fat diet. Vitamins that are needed are not being absorbed.

Hi moutere

More important, perhaps, is the type of fat. When losing weight is it really important that you are taking in the FULL range of nutrients and that includes things such as Essential Fatty Acids as well as the vitamins and minerals, etc.

That's why the nutritionists are always banging on about oily fish and that sort of thing - it really matters as it helps keep your body operating at an optimal level.

Have a read around the NHSChoices live well pages. I seem to remember there was stuff on there about types of fat in amongst the stuff about food and nutrition.

Yes, you do need some fat in your diet, but you don't need the wrong types.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info, it was very helpful. At the moment I have a streaming cold, and have let things slip a bit. Not too much damage done, and as soon as I am feeling better I will be back on track. At my heaviest I was 12st 2lbs, and now weigh in at 11st, so things were going right for me.

That's a brilliant loss. You certainly must have had great determination. I see that you are using Food Focus. I am using it too. I find it really easy to record calories and exercise. I try to get some exercise in, although it's not always easy at 76 years old. I have a good exercise bike and do some walking when the weather allows. I think we are all looking forward to some sunshine.

Hi

Too be honest i haven't lost the weight using food focus, only found this recently. But the principles i used are exactly the same as food focus, cut out the sugar, processed foods, lots of vegetables, fruit in moderation. No fried foods, no bread just learnt about correct nutrition and exercised. i would have lost more by now but i've put on a lot of muscle.

actually i found the more i learnt about food and the rubbish we are sold the more i ate healthily. I eat 6 times a day that helped alot. Cyclings a great calorie burner, make sure u set the seat at the correct height to protect ur knees and enjoy. Walkings great its how i started the weight loss, literally 1 step at a time.

Calorie counting i think is great, really teaches u the truth about food, and reading the labels.

ive kept to 2 basic rules when ive shopped for food when possible.

1. if i cant pronounce the item on the ingredients label or dont understand what it is it probably isnt that great for me.

2. Keep it as close to its natural form as possible.

Lots of water, learn to hydrate your body well. I dont live in Uk anymore so due to the heat here i have to drink alot, during exercise its about 2 litres an hour. We have drinkable tap water in Uk but never seem to make the most of it. That i miss.

Good luck

As soon as my house is sold, I won't be living in the UK. Passed my medicals and have residence visa in my passport.
