Hi guys, in the last 2-3years I seem to have put on quite a bit of weight! I'm 17 and weigh 91kg and I am looking to go back to a healthy weight. I'd really appreciate some tips and experiences. Thanks.

Hello and a very warm welcome to the Weight Loss Forum Ocean1121

At 17 it’s really important to eat properly and not try to ‘diet’ too restrictively. It’s very difficult to have full control over your meals unless you are in charge of the kitchen, are you living at home at the moment? Maybe you could get your family on board? But remember that small changes to your eating add up to a big difference.

If you haven’t already then please read the Welcome Message (in your inbox) and follow the link to Pinned Posts. In case you missed it here’s the link again here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... Please read it carefully so you can find all the information you need to find your way around the forum.

As a peer to peer support group we rely totally upon mutual encouragement. Nothing beats joining in, reading posts and replying to others. Our Group Weigh-in and the Daily Diary are probably the best places to start

Best wishes in your weight loss journey

Indigo 😊

Thanks, appreciate it. I had been diagnosed with IBS ands Prediabetes. That is the main reason that has made me think about changing my lifestyle and I have now realised how important it is.

Maybe have a look at a Low Carbohydrate diet, it may help your IBS and almost certainly the prediabetes

Have a read and please speak to your doctor, but many people have put diabetes into remission eating this way

I agree with IndigoBlue... be sure not to eat too restrictively or too low calories or you will wreck your metabolism and set yourself up for a lifetime of yo-yo dieting. Take it from me... I was always impatient with “1-2 pounds a week” weight loss but restricting your calories too much makes your body think it is starving and it slows your metabolism to hold fat. You can lose weight quickly but it is impossible to maintain. Follow along with the “daily diary” here and you will meet lots of people having success and see what kind of plans they use. Most people your weight seem to be successful on about 1700-1800 calories a day (in the welcome links, there are links to calculators that will help you determine your calorie intake). For me, doing low-fat was also a bad dietary move. I started adding 400 calories of healthy fats a day (olive oil, nuts, avocado) and started losing weight because I wasn’t hungry. For me, I have to ban all sugar AND sugar substitutes 😞 because they both make me crave more food. I even have to be careful with fruit. And do add exercising. In my anecdotal observation, people tend to lose weight easier when they add walkIng to their daily regimen. Best wishes and welcome! Thank you very much! I really appreciate your help, I think cutting back on sugar and salt is the best way forward for me. I'm going to start jogging for 20-30 mins about 4 times a week. Slowly but surely!
