Hi and welcome

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Wishing you all the best on your weight loss journey

There are many of us here who have some sort of barrier to losing weight easily - but the great thing is, it's entirely possible without any exercise whatsoever! In fact, successful weight loss is only achieved about 80% through diet and only 20% exercise. I suppose you could say that those of us who are unable to exercise, or whose exercise ability is compromised in some way just have to give it an additional 20%!

I started my weight loss journey at 14 stone - 5 and a half years ago. I was 49 years old and had been trying to lose weight all of my life since the age of 9.

I started my journey at the end of February 2012, and managed to lose 4.5 stone in 2 and a half years through calorie counting and logging/weighing all of my food.

Then re-gained some, lost some again and have now managed to more or less maintain for the past 6 months.

BUT... ideally I would love to drop another stone and maintain there.

I have a disability which makes exercise difficult, but the one thing that I realise very early on in my journey was that I was just eating FAR TOO MUCH! I was a short, middle aged, sedentary female and I was eating the same as 5ft 9" active man (my now husband!).

No wonder I was piling on the weight!

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring. I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - and you'll see that there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.

Thankyou so much for your kind words..they have already given me hope that I can lose weight...I was an ideal weight of 9stone, never had to diet..but after being prescribed antidepressants after losing my teenage son.... tablets increased my appetite so much that I ended up weighing 13stone which is where I am at now... there is no end to my appetite it is endless all caused by medication...but I will not lose heart...you have spurred me on....thankyou again

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your son. I have a daughter aged 20 (21 in November) and she went through some awful times with anxiety when she was about 14, which was awful. I can't imagine how you ever get over something like losing a child.

I guess you may be fairly short like me? I think the thing is to be aware that the anti depressants will increase your appetite and try to maximise the food that you eat - ensuring that you fill yourself up as much as possible on low calorie foods like vegetables, salads. Fruit can be high in sugar.

Try to avoid things like bread (especially white bread), pasta and rice - all the processed carbohydrates. The processed carbs and sugar won't help with your depression either :-( so another good reason to try and give these things up!

If you are able to get outside and do some short walks (I know you said balance was an issue) or even sit out in the fresh air, that will also help to boost your mood.

I'm having a similar problem. I went to doctors last November, diagnosed with major depression and anxiety. My weight was up and down but recently I've noticed i'm putting weight on and not as active.
