Giving it a go!

After many failed attempts on my own thought I needed bit of support. Could not face going down the club route again ... ( time and money!) . Have been struggling with bad knee (4 ops) and know losing weight will help with pain. So here i go ! My biggest temptation is biscuits .... coffee and ... tea and. ... any suggestions for healthy alternatives?

Hi Basilsmum

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

Welcome Basilsmum.

Sorry to hear about your knee and as you mention, losing weight will reduce the strain on it.

You'll find that the forum is full of many knowledgeable and friendly people, so feel free to post at anytime.

Good luck!

Get those biscuits out of your house! And instead plan two lowcal snacks per day e.g. nhs.uk/Livewell/loseweight/... or tsft.nhs.uk/media/44636/Low...

Your knees will thank you for it.

Hi Basilsmum

Welcome to the forum.

I too had painful knees and a weak ankle and after losing almost one and a half stone, the pressure is off them.

I also have three bread bins in my kitchen, two of which stored my packets of biscuits as I would eat a pack a day. I got rid of those and filled the bins with low cal sweet crunchy snacks and Ryvita, crispbread etc, which nowadays I hardly reach for at all. I'm doing my own low cal diet, and watching portion size after not having much success with pay as you weigh clubs 😁

Make a meal plan for each week and it really helps to keep a food journal. You don't mention how much weight you'd like to lose, but if you have a target weight and date, that can help also. I use a great recipe book almost exclusively because the meals are low cal, easy to do and very filling and tasty.

Good luck, you can do this you know. 👍

The beauty of calorie counting is you can eat and drink anything as long as you count the calories 😊 I drink tea and coffee, (mostly decaf these days) and if I want a biscuit I have one. If you cannot stop at one then I might be easier to go without. But no food is 'forbidden' it's about choice 😊

Although fruit has sugar and some people avoid eating it is find its a better alternative to biscuits. Reach for a plum or a small clementine and just don't buy the biscuits. It's easier to resist in the shop for 30 seconds than for the whole day when you've bought the packet.

Good luck.
