Vitamins for MS?

Canadianpianogirl profile image

My first post! I'm ways looking for natural ways to slow the progression of my ppms. I take fish oil, and vitamins D, E, A, B12 and biotin daily. Is there something that you've tried that you feel has helped you?

Hi and welcome. I have PPMS and I take Evening Primrose everyday, and have done every day for the last 10 years when I found out my dx. Blessings Jimeka 😊

I'm not familiar with it. What symptoms do you take it for? It must help if still taking after 10 years!

I have no idea. A friends dad owned a health food store and he swore by evening primrose for ms. He passed away so I never found out anymore. I take it out of respect of his knowledge. 😊

It's supposed to help remyelination. I take it too (along with NAG).

Hi there! I used to take it...but I had knee surgery a few years back (a university squash injury finally caught up with me). I was told to stop taking it before the surgery and I just didn’t pick it up again. Thanks for reminding me about it!

Alpha Lipoic Acid has been shown to prevent or slow atrophy of the brain in MS patients. I worked my way to 600 mg twice a day.

I also take it..but only on 600 1ce a day... next week going to 2 a day.. it has helped my balance problems greatly.. hope that the extra will help even more..I see the researchers are trying it for ppms.. so am hopeful..

I also take Alpha Lipoic Acid. My neurologist has told me he takes it as well to protect his own brain as he ages and he does not have MS. He also mentioned, (maybe tmi), if you can detect the “fragrance” in your urine it means you are taking enough. 😏😇

I added some to my grocery order today...after reading these posts! I’m interested in trying it! I’ll discuss with my neurologist as well. I’d honestly never even heard of it!

Because I'm older I take a good daily vitamin also. Eat healthy as possible, consider adding Vitamins Potassium & Magnesium. I split mine up and take half in the morning and the other half before dinner so they can be absorbing first.

I understand that magnesium should be taken at bedtime.

Hi and welcome! Those are great ones! Similarly, I take fish oil, Vit D, and a multi-vitamin. RRMS for over 20 years; stable. I combine with yoga, walking, good diet and good sleep. Try to keep stress down, but we all know how difficult that can be :-) No way to say for sure what is causation vs. correlation, but would love to hear about natural methods others' use and have found successful.

The only natural ways to help with MS include a normal healthy diet, exercise, enough sleep, manage stress - in fact, for PwMS, all of the normal advice given to people who don't have MS applies.

If you are taking fairly high amounts of Vit D you need to take magnesium and Vit K2 as well. Also be careful with Vits A and E - they were being highly promoted as wonder supplements back in the 1970's (I think it was that far back) but studies showed that they actually worsened the all-cause mortality statistics.

In relation to biotin - the last clinical study run by MedDay unfortunately failed miserably, although some people believe their may be a small very specific sub-set of people who can feel some benefits from taking HD biotin. There is now no information on the biotin studies on the MedDay website - and unfortunately the removal of all the biotin related information included the huge list of blood tests which can be badly affected by HD biotin. Consequently there are still many people around the world still taking biotin who could get incorrectly diagnosed with serious thyroid problems or other health issues because blood tests come back with false results, alternatively serious health problems could be missed due to false blood test results..

you are correct, before I take my blood for thyroid,I personally have to stop taking all vitamins for a week to get an accurate test

Don't you just love the way mortality statistics get twisted to fit an agenda?

Hi! A few months back I added a Bifidobacteria probiotic. It honestly has helped so much with energy and just an overall better well being. I find it amazing how our gut health can affect our entire body. But I feel like different supplements maybe work for some and don’t for others. It may be a trial and error.

How is that probiotic different from the others? I must say I have been struggling with the probiotic choice.

Jer29-11 profile image
Jer29-11 in reply to IFwczs

Well, I chose to try it because of its anti-inflammatory properties and effects on immune health. I’m sensitive to probiotics and this one just has one strain of bacteria, so you’re not getting a lot of different things. I wasn’t expecting it to help so much. I noticed a difference on day 2 of taking it. kdali posted an article about Bifidobacteria awhile ago (I can’t find it now!) and after I read it, I decided to get some. I’ve been taking it for a few months now 😊

🎉🎉🎉🥰 THIS makes me so happy! What brand do you take? This is the only one I need in my diet. Jer29-11

You can't take vitamins as you want, you need to ask your doctor.

IFwczs profile image

Agreed. You need to be regularly tested.

Hi there! I report all vitamins and supplements to my neurologist and my ms specialist. The vitamin D was suggested and encouraged. I also take calcium and magnesium because I’m 52 and I should. Lol. I haven’t eaten cows milk products for over a year, and want to make sure that I’m getting enough to avoid other issues.

You need to be regularly tested for vitamins D and A. I also take a high dose of vitamin C, CoQ10, NAC and broccoli sprouts (other than primrose oil, magnesium and NAG mentioned above). It's always good to get your levels tested. My PCP is an Integrative Medicine MD.
