Acupuncture for MS

I would like to write about my experiences with acupuncture for MS.

First, a lot of insurance companies (at least some of BCBS) cover the procedure as long as it's conducted in a medical doctor's office, and not in a spa or a massage salon. Call your insurance company before you go.

Second, acupuncture needles really do not hurt. I was afraid of that, but my friend convinced me to give it a try a few years back. They can start with really small needles and graduate to larger ones. None of them hurt.

My neuro's assistant told me that acupuncture helps MS patients with numbness. In my case, it has helped me with numbness, liver cleanse, bladder (urinary urgency), stress and sleep problems. And just in general blood circulation. I have never tried acupuncture on the back, but I have heard it helps with back pain. Of course, if lesions are on the spine, I don't know how safe it is.

I read on the Internet (obviously I am not an acupuncturist) that MS patients should not have acupuncture in head zones. Maybe because of the brain lesions. So now I have been avoiding that.

My friend’s acupuncturist actually sits by her during the entire procedure. I would be really annoyed by that because, believe it or not, I fall asleep now with all the needles.

I have had permanent numbness in my left leg for many years following sciatica. It has not changed. But my hands get numb periodically , and after acupuncture they don't get numb as frequently or as intense. I usually go once a week. It is definitely worth a try. Good luck, and keep me posted!

I had acupuncture before my neck surgery. I found it very relaxing 😌 and it helped with the pain. I used to go once a week, it was worth it. Let us know starlight5 if you go, blessings Jimeka

This sounds so interesting and thanks so much for sharing. A couple of quick questions: Do you have to get a doctor's order from your neurologist or primary care physician in order for the acupuncture treatment to be covered? Who orders it to be done once a week? and lastly - have you tried a massage therapist? Thanks for any input you can provide.

I don't think you need an order from your doctor (I didn't) but please check with your insurance. The subrogation company for my insurance wanted to know why I am doing this, but didn't come back when I said for MS. I do it once a week because I work full time, but would do it daily if I could. I get a back massage once a week. My mother, whose hobby is MS, read somewhere that foot massage is very helpful for MS.
