Treating OCD with humor

I'm new to the site and I'm really happy I found this group! I just thought I'd post a bit of an introduction: I'm in my late 20s and I've struggled with OCD since I was about 10 or so. I deal with checking and cleaning and contamination obsessions/compulsions as well as a mixture of "real event" OCD. I obsess that I've done something illegal, or I'm going to do something illegal, or that I've hurt someone or that I'm a pervert. ERP therapy has definitely helped as well as taking a high SSRI dose. I also recently started writing about my experience with OCD and mental illness (at psychologyonions.substack.com). I've found that writing about the absurdity of OCD and trying to make fun of the disorder has helped take some of the power of it away. Writing and joking about OCD obviously hasn't cured me, but it has helped me to fight back and laugh at an illness that can often seem really dark and scary.

I agree - it can help to laugh at OCD (just as long as we're doing the laughing and other people are not laughing at us).

I should like to check out your blog. Laughing at ourselves also helps us not to take it too seriously - just as you say, it takes some of the power of OCD away.
