Have just been told after recent abdominal US I have fatty liver disease. Have never had previous issues. Has anyone else on Hydrea discovered this as another new diagnoses?? My bloods and LFT all seem ok.
Can Hydrea affect your liver in this way?
Many thanks

I was told some years ago that I had fatty liver and was told to modify my diet and lifestyle. Which I did and I reversed it quite easily and it has not returned. I was not on Hydrea at that stage. I don’t know if there is a link tho it seems to be one of those modern day health problems that can easily be rectified by changing your diet and some habits.
Thank you for your reply… I was taken aback as I follow what I consider a reasonably good low fat diet and I don’t drink alcohol except on odd occasion . Now to look at my diet more closely again.
Yout body needs Fat, in fact every Cell in ones Body needs Fat, your Brain is made up of 70% Fat, lack of good Fats can Crucify ones Body, NO OILS IN PLASTIC, ONLY ORGANIC IN GLASS, I ONLY COOK WITH EXTRA VIRGIN RAW ORGANIC COLD PRESSED COCONUT OIL...Could help you ❤
Good day Stargaye, I also have been told that my Ferritin levels are slightly high but all my platelets readings are all normal, I have been In Hydroxcarbamide and Aspirin for eleven years now without to many problems well apart from a small stroke last year and a lot of stress 🤦♀️ Haematologist is not unduly worried at the moment as She seems to think that it could all be down to inflammation from some arthritis I have in my joints and this could be causing the iron overload which can effect the liver readings, she also advised me to look at what I eat, which I hasten to add is a very good low fat diet and do not drink, like you maybe the occasional wine but not often. The main thing she said was cut out red meat 😡 well you can have but not to often, and watch what you have for breakfast as most cereals have fortified vitamins in and iron being one, so google what cereals have iron in and you can find a complete list of all every day cereals that are fortified or unfortified the latter being the best ones.
It might help a little, there is always some explanation as to why our levels bounce around.
While HU can cause some issues with the liver, I have not heard of it being a direct cause of fatty liver. I have experienced fat deposits on the liver due to weight. As Pachena suggests, diet and lifestyle changes are recommended in this situation.
No I think a fatty liver is a symptom of MPN diseases or lifestyle? Hydrea is not causing this. I also had this with and without Hydrea. Now one year after allogenic stem cell transplant the liver is again normal.
happy to help with dietary advice for this as my husband has this and really flared, Ive recently been told have a bit of gall bladder sludge to watch out for - a huge thing is sugar replacements and processed food - we are having super smoothies every day and have a 98% unprocessed diet as such - it’s been hard but huge improvement all round health as well as improvement on general inflammation
Also suggestion of milk thistle is a good idea but also making sure you go to toilet regular as constipation makes processing supplements and foods trickier and all linked
Also adding probiotics is important for the liver and certain strains help gut/liver link directly x
hi I have had to come of my statins & HU as Liver function tests high & Gamma GT off the scale! Had liver ultrasound which was normal & full liver screen which was negative - waiting to hear whether I can start HU again slowly. I’m off all alcohol too! Might start milk thistle though. My consultant thought my body couldn’t cope with statins, HU & low alcohol intake - I am waiting for further consultation in Nov.
all medications get broken down in the liver. I had a fatty liver even before I went on medication at the age of 51 and all my Dr. friends said that everyone at that age has fatty liver. That is actually a very tragic truth in our society.
There are many reasons for fatty liver and they are not just alcohol consumption but also every single chemical in our diet, the chemicals that we breathe in through our detergents, air fresheners, perfumes, et cetera chemicals that are taken into the body by the clothing detergents body creams make up hairspray et cetera. Household cleaning agents, bad air, bad water that we drink.
the more of these things that we can ban from our bodies and breathing, the less stress there is on our liver. another thing we can do is put a hot water bottle on the liver area when going to bed, preferably with castor oil rubbed over that area. Then put a bit of plastic wrap over a thin towel and then the hot water bottle. That helps clean the liver really well. Mixtures are also excellent internally. or eating bitter foods like dandelion leaves, rocket, olives, capers, et cetera . The more bitter the better.
You can do to help clean the liver and create a bile flow will help your body be healthier while helping your liver stay healthier and do a better job at breaking down the necessary medication that are necessary to keep us as healthy as possible. Hope to. Have helped.
This is what has happened to me since starting on hydroxurea. Carotid artery surgery on the right side. Last week blood test shows possible Crohn's disease. Yesterday went in my Oncology office for routine blood work. My platelets were 858,000 and rising. I was told to double up on my hydroxurea to 1000 my a day. I have a appointment in one week. If double the medication doesn't work ,I am about ready to walk away and go a different route. Not telling you to do that mind you. I didn't have any issues other than high platelets before taking this medication. Who knows????? Hope you get that taken care of. Peace from South Alabama.
Thank you to everyone for their responses…. I have been doing lots of reading with regards to Hydrea, chemotherapy and medications etc. Some of the readings suggest that chemo medication can cause liver steatosis….ie “fatty liver”
“Under chemotherapy, up to 85% of patients develop liver steatosis. Steatohepatitis is the more serious event, especially if accompanied by an increase in bilirubin levels.” From one article..
I know I have had issues with some medication’s in the past …metabolising them ? And since being on Hydrea I’ve definitely experienced digestive issues .. my last surveillance gastroscopy/ colonoscopy in July showed gastritis/oesphagitis .. never had this previously and I’ve had many… plus also developed a kidney stone in a very short period of time .. I mentioned this previously. Is it the Hydrea causing issues.
I do monitor my diet closely due to ulcerative colitis of over 20 plus years. Low fat and lots of vegs/fruit…mainly home cooked meals… don’t eat out a lot and I don’t eat fast food or “crap” for want of a better word..drink virtually no alcohol and don’t drink coffee or coke or such .. So am now trying to figure out how can I modify my diet further.. And needless to say I took great offence to being compared to a foie gras duck/goose by the GP who gave me the dx.
Haematologist 3 mth check appointment on Thursday… let see what he has to say ?
Hi. I'm not sure Hydrea can cause fatty liver. However, I was on Hydrea for a lot of years and am suffering from a fatty liver, but the worst part was my right foot breaking out in extremely painful ulcers. Had to have hospital treatment twice a week for many months after I ceased with Hydrea. The ulcers were a rare side effect from Hydrea.
Hi this is a good article on non alcoholic fatty liver (steatosis)
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
Low fat is really not the correct way. High carb including fructose from fruit is the reason for most of those who suffer from this. There has been so much misunderstanding around diet and the low fat approach has severely damaged health in the long run. I don’t really want to get into a discussion to much over this but encourage you start to research yourself.
Some meds can also cause this so it would be advisable to check your diet re carbs first to make sure it is not complicating the picture
I eat very little carbs by comparison to the other food groups consumed in my diet. My diet is something I have always been attentive in following .. eating healthy and nutritious food. The only indulgence is occasional cake at birthdays or such. And sometimes will have a chocolate now and then.. plus virtually no alcohol. I do have a medical science background so have always read and researched medical issues pertaining to my own health. I do have a sensitivity and have had reactions to certain medications.
This is something I recently read too..
“Fatty liver and hepatic steatosis are among the most important chronic injuries following chemotherapy and cytotoxic drugs that are used in the treatment of cancer patients. These hepatic disorders may lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (14).”
“Results showed that chemotherapy is associated with a significantly increased risk of fatty liver occurrence, which is higher in women than men. However, occurrence of fatty liver following chemotherapy, regardless of diabetes, metabolic syndrome or BMI, as well as age of the patients, can be expected in all scenarios.”
thank you for that update I maybe also under this category.
. I have recently had a liver scan and it showed some fibrosis!! I do not eat carbs and haven’t drunk alcohol in 40 years so it could only really fall under the chemo category. I am currently on HU and Pegasys and have stopped taking both till my next my Telehealth with my NPN specialist in a weeks time . Nausea is also very high.
I also have a research studies background and research all the time. I wish you the best.
