Dental Work - stopping aspirin?

Hello all, I was wondering how long to stop my aspirin before I have some major dental work done at the end of the month. (I have ET CALR mutation with platelets currently 300 and taking Anagrelide). What are your experiences please? Many thanks in advance.

hi Gaithersburg, you will need to ask your haematology team for advice about this. Best wishes, Maz

You need to check with your MPN care team for a case specific answer to your question. My care team recommends d/c aspirin 3 days before significant dental work or minor surgical procedures. This is specific to my MPN profile. Your answer may be different.

I have an MPN. I recently had a tooth extraction and implant. I did not stop aspirin. I did stop taking turmeric with curcurmin a week before. With the extraction the bleeding was supposed to have stopped by evening. It stopped bleeding lightly sometime overnight. The implant did not bleed at all even though I was told it would. I have the JAK2 mutation.

Normally 5-7 days but all depends on what sort of dental work. You dentist should be able to give you advice

My dentist wouldn't do my extraction without e- mail from hematology, they advised to stop asprin for a week.

I was told a week, to stop all meds, the Hospital did mine, My Dentist recommended this.

Please tell me how you are coping with ANAGRELIDE, My Consultant has recommended I go on this, as Hydroxyurea was making my hair fall..

.Many Thanks

Hello Cherilyn, thanks for your reply. My Haematology department are impossible to reach so I contacted the Clinical Nurses at Guys who said 5 days. I have been on Anagrelide since 2010 and I take 3 per day - that's 1 in the morning and 2 at night. It brings my platelets level down to about 300 from 1,500. Generally I manage okay with it as it's hard to say if side effects are from having ET or from Anagrelide as I often feel tired, have headaches and feel a little lightheaded. Generally though I think I tolerate the medication well although in the last year I have had my platelets double for no reason 3 times and have had to adjust the Anagrelide dose until it came back to normal. Also I have some palpitations occasionally but nothing consistent to measure. I am pretty active and generally walk, play tennis and do pilates but listen to my body and rest if I am not feeling up to these things. I hope this helps you.

Well, I am low risk, but my dentist has never advised to stop any medication when performing an extraction!

hi, I am on Warfarin and have had no problem with extractions. Talk to your dentist for advice but I am sure you won’t have a problem.

I've had to sit for hours & hours of dental work when I got my upper & lower implants. Dentist didn't want me to stop any of my medication so I never even had to ask my hematologist. Everything went well. But definitely ask your dr if at all concerned.

My hematologist instructed me to have my dental team send an email with all dental work they will do an they would give instructions on how to handle it. That includes anything outside of a routine cleaning.

As others have stated, this is really a case-specific question and consultation with both your hematologist and dentist is recommended.

I had an extraction in January. Stopped aspirin 3 days prior and had minimal bleeding.
