PV - Critical Illness insurance claim?

I was diagnosed with PV last year. I am struggling with work and feeling very anxious and realise I have a life with critical illness policy with LV but am not sure if PV is covered. It doesn't appear to be listed explicitly. LV boast that they meet the ABI guidelines for critical illness. Can anyone offer success stories or advice how to approach this.

Hi

Many of us on here have made successful claims, me included back in 2012. PV and ET are classified as blood cancers and the ABI instructed the industry some years ago to treat them as such regarding claims. I have some info I can share which might help, and will send it over tomorrow.

Best wishes

Lou

hello. I was diagnosed with PV in 2015 and made a successful claim on my critical illness insurance. It took a while as doctors had to fill in forms etc Definitely put in your claim.

Good luck. Take care x

Good morning, I now have the information to hand...

As mentioned, I made a successful claim in 2012 to Scottish Provident - who initially told me that ET was not covered. What turned it around was some advice from the ABI. They published guidelines to the industry in 2006 – confirming that ET and PV were classified as cancerous and should therefore be covered by CI claims. (Previously they were in the pre-cancerous category).

I'm attaching a screenshot of the ABI Press Release, and will send their full Statement in separate replies - as I can only seem to add one image at a time.

The change of guidance was due to the WHO re-classifying ET and PV from "myeloproliferative diseases" to "myeloproliferative neoplasms" to reflect the underlying clonal genetic changes that are a key feature of these diseases.

At the start of the claim process my Haematologist didn't think I had a strong case, but when I shared the ABI statement with him he changed his view. He filled in the paperwork and helped with the response to two initial screening questions from the insurers claims team:

1. Is ET classified as malignant? Yes, because it's a clonal disorder

2. Is it invasive? Yes, because it's present throughout the body in the blood.

I hope this helps, it sounds like you are really struggling. There are many people on here who have made successful claims so I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Let us know how you get on?

All the best

Lou

That's really helpful info - thank you so much - I'm now on tenterhooks as I don't have a current copy of my policy and need to confirm that I do actually have Critical Illness cover! Doh! Will report back here if I havent been a total doofus!

I had critical.illness policy with work so i claimed for MF but they said no as i had symptoms prior to taking out the policy, so read your terms and conditions really carefully first, if i had waited until i had the policy 2 years i would have been paid out!
