Travel insurance

Hello all

I was diagnosed with ET in 2015 and haven’t travelled abroad since. Is it easy to get travel insurance with an MPN? Does anyone have any recommendations for companies who offer policies to those with rare conditions? I’ll be travelling within Europe.

Many thanks for any advice

Best wishes

We (husband and I) currently use insurefor.com. I've (F 52) got high blood pressure (on two different tablets) and ET ( only on Asprin) good rates.

Hi, I've recently used Staysure and they were good and competitively priced. Ian

HiI'm over 50 with ET and I use Saga. The only question they ask is whether you've ever had blood clots. Otherwise no problems. I've been with them for several years now

I use Multitrip year-round, premium worldwide plan, with no issues, for the past 5 years. On every renewal, I have to call to an e-doc, which just asks if there was any clot issues, which there wasn't. Then, I pay around 30 euro extra and add the reference number to the policy.

I do not recommend Staysure or Avanti. They take months to pay out claims! Beware of any travel insurance policies that are administered by Ergo Travel and claims by Davies Group.

I’ve used Staysure for many years now - never had to claim but always found it easy to get cover for my ET and other pre-existing conditions and annual premium seems reasonable compared to some other companies

Staysure do offer very competitive rates.

However I had the misfortune to make a medical claim. I had to pay my hospital bill of £8000 myself. I was fortunate that I had a high credit card limit, some people may not be in a position to have that sort of funding. It took 4 months and many phone calls/emails to be reimbursed.

Staysure pass the buck to the administrators Ergo Travel, they pass the buck to Davies Group.

I took the case to the Financial Ombudsman and received compensation. Read the reviews on Trust Pilot, I hope you never have to make a claim.

I have had ET since 1992 (31 years). I have always included this on my travel insurance and have always been given cover. I have other things covered on might travel insurance as well.

thank you so much for your kind words I was 47 when I started with ET and I’m now 78. I can’t believe how fast the years have gone and I am so grateful for the care I’ve had over the years. Good luck and good health to you and everyone.

Hi Jaynie. I have my travel insurance with Marks And Spencer. When I was diagnosed I contacted them as ET was not listed on their "acceptance criteria". It was not a problem. They added at no extra cost. I now get an annual reminder to confirm there are no changes In my condition. Hope this helps.

it’s a nightmare if you have other conditions also.

Last year I had puffin.

I’ve had in the past good to go and medical 4 you.

Hi

To be honest I was surprised that travel policies weren’t to loaded for ET.

I still go on the comparison sites & then add the condition before comparing.

I’ve found that still to be the best way to get the best value cover.

Have a lovely time when you go.

Hello

I’m ET jak2. I am insurances through Barclays Bank. I pay £12 a month for their Travel pack this cover all the family for Travel abroad UK and RAC. I haven’t traveled abroad since I was diagnosed in 2020. I phoned them last week to declare my Illness and medication due to booking a holiday abroad. The only questions they asked was, have I had any blood clots, which I haven’t

I was expecting to pay more or to be told they wouldn’t insure me and to my surprise no all is good, no extra cost and fully insured.

Good luck with your search

Thanks everyone! Lots to go at there! I thought it might be impossible/difficult/expensive to get cover and I’m pleasantly surprised you’ve all told me it’s not 🥰

Hi, I recently got back from 12 days in Canada. I have JAK2POSITIVE ET and am over 70. The cheapest insurance I could find was with the P.O. however it was still over £600.

I’m going to be traveling from US to Italy and am looking at World Nomads for insurance. My partner used them for a 6 week cycling trip. They have medical evacuation & repatriation coverage, trip cancellation, overseas dental . . . Just enter where you’re going and your dates to get a quote. Go have fun!

Also check out Squaremouth where there are many companies to compare.
