Travel Insurance

Hi everyone

I have family in the US and I may have to travel at very short notice - Tuesday/Wednesday maybe - as one of my family members is seriously ill. I will need travel insurance from the UK - and wondered what company anyone would recommend. My problem is I’m still under investigation and in “wait and see” mode as BMB and gene testing have all come back negative - but haematologist still thinks it is ET. Is anyone else in the same boat and what did you do?

Thanks

Meg

Hi. I am still under investigation too. My haematologist said at my last consultation she did not want to put an initial Dx of PV as it would have insurance and other consequences. From that I took it that until I have a firm Dx then nothing to worry about. I am going to Dubai in 2 weeks. I would be interested what others have to say in this matter.

Thanks for replying - I’ve decided to take the recommendations and go with staysure - less than 200 pounds for the whole year, multiple trips worldwide.

I was going to recommend stay sure too, I’ve just sorted ours out last week, both myself and my son are awaiting investigations, I was shocked by the level of cover and the sensible approach they take as well as the price, I went to book for one trip and decided to take out the annual cover as there wasn’t much in it!

I think most (all?) insurers will require you to declare that you’re under investigation and may not cover anything to do with ET but other cover should be ok.I use Staysure for travel insurance and they seem to have a good medical appraisal system and reasonable charges for declared medical conditions.

Just got insurance on line from staysure - easy peasy - thanks for recommending.

Staysure came back to me and rescinded the policy - saying it’s because I’m under investigation rather than diagnosed. This is a huge problem. I’m stuck in the UK now.

Hi Megabyte - I have travel insurance with Staysure. They have always been very helpful and very understanding.

I took out an annual policy with Staysure for Europe then wanted to extend it to other areas later this year- they have refused it as say I am undergoing investigations but these are just regular checks. I went over this with several people and they went to the underwriter. . I have post etMF and despite speaking to many people they have refused me medical cover when travelling. I now have moved to saga and can have single trip cover only which is a lot more costly.

Try All Clear insurance they have a good rep as well as staysure

The problem isn't getting insurance if you have an MPN diagnosis - it's if you don't have a clear diagnosis - people won't insure you if there are investigations going on - even if that's just a "wait and see".

I am no expert but if you have no actual diagnosis- then why raise it ? Once you have it and it is something that requires disclosure then l agree you should advise them. You may have nothing seriously wrong. Every test l have is an investigation that may raise something- it’s the nature of a chronic disease Perhaps l am wrong ? Fortunately in Germany the state insurance system provides travel health insurance no disclosure is required. I pay 30 euro a year for it

Sorry to keep at this, but is your policy from Saga for undiagnosed MPN, but ongoing testing? Thanks Meg

It’s diagnosed but all of our conditions have regular blood tests

Yes, if I was diagnosed, it would be easy to get insurance - but I don’t have a diagnosis so I cannot get travel insurance. Im in limbo - and could end up with this situation for the rest of my life if they won’t formally diagnose me.

I am still having problems with insurance. I have Aviva multi annual cover but they are excluding my high blood pressure and anything related to my blood in essence. I was given a link for multiple companies who apparently will cover whilst undergoing investigation however Staysure, Allclear will not cover any unconfirmed diagnosis. There must be companies that will cover a potential MPN but waiting confirmation of Dx. This is a nightmare. I am due to fly out next week. Have requested a call back from another couple as I did not want to do the online option but speak with them

Oh dear - same problem I have. Please let me know if you get anyone will you? Wonder if saying “monitoring platelets” rather than “under investigation” would be more compliant with the insurers?

Hi everyone,I’m on hydroxycarbamide and have just been turned down by staysure because of medication, they have recommended biba.org.uk or insure cancer,I’m going to try both and see how I get on.

Yes, if I had a diagnosis, I’d get roughly the same deal - but I don’t have a diagnosis, still under investigation, hence - no one will insure me.

What an absolute pain in the rear, why don’t you have a chat to Macmillan they might be able to help.good luck.

It’s the “under investigation” that’s the stumbling block. Thing is, I’ve never felt better!

If it’s all come back negative what else are they waiting for this is just messing with your life it’s really not good enough.

OMG - spoke to the haemo consultant yesterday and we went through my records, and because my platelets are stable in low 500s, and negative results in all blood tests and bone marrow biopsy, he discharged me. He’s backed it up with a letter, so I’ll be able to get travel insurance. I’ve still to go to my GP every 6 months to have blood sample sent to the lab just incase the platelet level rises but I’m no longer “under investigation”. Woohoo🎉. I’m staying on aspirin 75mg daily.
