I've been getting my results from haematology Nurse at hospital for 2 years .
They must be so overworked they don't answer phone last couple of months.
So I rang my Nhs consultants secretary who gave me the 3 I wanted and agreed to send full print out . (Don't get FULL results just basics after speaking to consultant.
It helps me so much to prepare questions so use valuable time well. Also so I have an equal part in my care.
Question .. do I have a right to results when they have them . or do I have to wait for appointment. ?
Thanks

Those are your medical records. The information in the records is your property. You have a fundamental right to everything in your record anytime you request them. Ideally your healthcare system would have a patient portal where you can directly access your records yourself. This is how I do it. I also can request a copy of any notes that do not post to the portal anytime I wish. My labs always post. In many portals I can also see and print a historic view where the results present in a chart form, allowing me to look at trends over time. Note that this is exactly what providers do when looking at your records on their own screens. You can also request printed copies of your record in this form. it is much more convenient.
I always insist on the full version of anything in my record, which is easy since that is what my providers give me in an appointment anyway. I never have to insist because it is automatically done. I would fire any provider that tried to limit my access to my records.
Persistence always pays off. If there is no patient portal you can access, which I find quite odd in a modern healthcare setting, then all you should have to do is ask the provider you are seeing to hit the print button. They will always have the results in front of them while they are talking to you.
Hello - I think it varies across the uk but I am fortunate to have access to a patient portal at my hospital. I had to request access, when I stumbled across its existence - it wasn’t offered- but it is very useful to have. My blood results are usually available to clinicians within a day but I have to wait 48 hrs for access so I time my blood tests to make sure I have time to look at them before my appointment. It might be worth asking if there is anything like this or anything planned at your hospital.
For convenience, I have my blood tests done at my GP about a week before my appointment (which is always by phone now). The results aren’t sent to my GP by the lab but are included in the letter to the GP that follows each of my haem appts.
The portal I use to access my results quickly is provided by the hospital and I don’t think it is linked to the NHS app, unlike the GP Health record which is linked to the app. So the blood tests ordered by the hospital don’t appear in the NHS app but any ordered by my GP would. So confusing!!!😆
Do you have your bloods done through your GP? I do if I don’t have a face to face appointment, in which case I get the full print out of results and forward them to my nurse. If I go to the hospital I take a screen shot of them.
Yes . But they say I can only get results from hospital . Fine if go for test there but as no appointment with dr. At present just phone a week after test. . It’s 21 miles away so not worth going for test…..
Hi after reading your post I went onto the NHS APP. I think you can get your results from that. Failing that you have every right to get them from the GP. Good luck
Sorry -I should have said that although I have my bloods done at the GP this is requested by the hospital and they provide a blood card for me to take to the GP saying what’s required
I would love access to a patient portal! My blood tests are done at the hospital so they only appear as a very shortened version on my NHS app when they are sent through to the GP surgery. I take a screen shot of the computer screen at my hospital appointment when we are discussing my results.
Unfortunately my NHS App only shows GP results, nothing from the hospital not even the medication I’m on! Not sure who to contact to try to get access.
I'm in Israel and have my blood tests done at the hospital (complete CBC every time). The results are back in about an hour and my hematologist hands me a printout immediately. That's when I have my appointment. Great system, I'd say! If I need it I get a phlebotomy on the spot, too.
I have downloaded the My Chart App onto my phone. That shows every blood results you have had . However I only found out about it by asking a friend who is a Doctor. Not sure if this is Nationwide or just programmed for Exeter Devon Hospital 👍 Julia .
Yes they ring to confirm who you are then send a link . It’s really good for all your test results but no one ever told me it existed. My Dr friend told me all hospital users are supposed to be given its details but O never was . Hope it works out. Julia 👍
