Spleen pain?

Yesterday (Monday) I was vomiting from 5 am, after a while there was nothing to bring up so I was heaving on am empty stomach. I am prescribed anti sickness tablets with every prescription but haven’t needed them until now. Previously I have managed the nausea with Gaviscon. I brought the second one straight back, but had another later and I did stop heaving. However I still felt very sick, but I managed to keep water down after that.

I slept on and off a lot yesterday. Today when I got up I managed to get a shower after which I felt slightly better as I had also been sweating a lot. I had a small slice of toast which I kept down and a small amount of soup at lunch time. I’ve been sipping water a lot too.

I am presuming the cause of the vomiting is medication, I haven’t been In close contact with anyone for several days previously and had the same food as my husband and he is ok.

I did expect to ache a bit today but the pain in my left side (spleen area) is quite bad. Has anyone else had this? I phoned the clinical nurse and she just said it would go off, it hasn’t lessened at all, and it hurts even more if I cough. I feel as though I’ve done ten rounds with a heavyweight boxer!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi lizziep how you feeling today would get in touch with your consultant or is your clinical nurse mpn trained because of not and you are still getting pains from spleen area and still being sick your medication for your mpn will have little effect because with you being sick you will be bringing them back up but hopefully the antisickness tablets will do the trick if not phone your consultant especially spleen area pain get better soon Stay safe

While the nausea may be a medication side effect, I would not assume that the spike in this issue is due to the meds. The pain in the upper left side is concerning. It is a symptom associated with splenic infarction or rupture. Note that nausea can be a part of issues with the spleen as well. Suggest that you treat this as an emergent issue and seek immediate assessment to rule out a more serious issue. It would be my better to find out that this is not something serious than to find out the hard way that it was something that should not have been ignored.

Hopefully this will turn out to be a tempest in a teapot. Best not to assume that it is. This is an issue that requires a response from a MPN expert provider who knows not to fob off potential issues with the spleen in the context of a MPN.

Thank you, if it’s still as painful tomorrow I’ll phone the clinical nurses (again) it’s evening here now so there won’t be anyone to speak to who knows anything about MPN’s until tomorrow.

Hope this really is a minor kerfuffle. Please do let us know regardless.

I hope you have been seen by at least a doctor by now. Your spleen is very vulnerable, especially with Myelofibrosis. My wife lost hers after it burst nearly seven years ago. Please go to an A and E at your local hospital. Hopefully it's nothing but after my wife's experience when she was within minutes of dying, don't chance it. All the best.

As everyone else has said it's important to get this assessed very soon . Problems with the spleen can cause left sided pain (especially with the pain radiating via the vagus nerve to the left shoulder), vomiting and a high temperature. If your temperature gets high ie over 38' or whatever you presumably have been warned about (I am on ruxolitinib and was given a leaflet warning when to get help and a direct number to haematology) you certainly should get immediate help. I had a splenic infarction and had similar symptoms though not such vicious vomiting.

I agree with the others. Do not delay. I had a splenic infarction years ago. I had pain all day but I ignored it and ended up being rushed to the hospital with the worst pain I ever had . I thought I was having a heart attack. They kept me for 3 days. I didn’t have nausea so that is even more concerning. I hope by the time you read this, that you’re in the ER getting treated.

I lost my spleen in. 2014 mine was killing off my red blood cells

I was in agony prior after a short cycle ride bent over couldn’t stand up straight

I’d go to your haematologist soon as or A&E

Very similar to my last several days. But I can't tell if I caught a nasty bug, or if this is spleen related. I take Oxycodone for the pain so it's hard to gage the full extent of the pain. I hope I'm done being nauseated and throwing up. Like you said, there's nothing to throw up so it's a lot of dry heaves, and my abdominal muscles are so tired and sore from that. I was finally able to keep some food down yesterday and it seems to have digested before the nausea and heaves came back. But that's the first food item in 3 days. I'm guessing I had/have flu, but it's so hard to tell with the overlapping symptoms of MF. I have an office visit with my onc tomorrow, if I make it. Might get a blood transfusion if my HG is low enough. I certainly hope so, I feel like trash. He has one scheduled anyway.

I hope you feel better soon. Sending good vibes and solidarity.

I agree with others here and hope you’ve had it evaluated. That type of pain is a warning sign and should not be ignored. An ER would be able to do the appropriate tests to rule out anything serious. Good luck!
