2nd Shingrix jab

Hi, I’m a 70 year old lady with ET and taking hydroxycarbamide. I had my second Shingrix jab 2 days ago and started having side effects within 6 hours. Had no reaction to first dose or to any of my 3 Covid jars or flu jab.

This time I had awful headaches, stomache ache, nausea, sickness and vertigo . Still feel rough now. Has anyone else had anything similar. Feel absolutely drained!!

Your reaction to the vaccine reminds me of when I had shingles aged around 55. It put me in bed for days with headache and sickness in line with the worst migraine I’d ever experienced. Thankfully the accompanying shingles rash and nerve pain weren’t so bad for me but it did take many weeks to recover physical fitness and stamina. Altogether not an illness I want to experience again.

I hope your vaccine symptoms subside soon but if not it’s probably best to get in touch with your GP surgery.

Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.Still feel giddy and a bit lifeless.

I’ll see how I am over the weekend before I call my GP

My reaction to the Shingrix vaccine was the worst I’ve ever had. I was vomiting all evening and night. I reacted to the first but not the second. My pharmacist said it’s often the other way round - I’m sorry you feel so awful. But it was very short lived. I felt fine the next day. Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate your response. I am now in the 2nd day and the effects are slowly going but I felt awful yesterday and didn’t know what to do with myself. Feeling better now but still room for improvement, so waiting for tomorrow to come!

I'm also on HU and had three days of reaction to 2nd Shingrix. It hurt going in and I had much as you describe. Got better by third day. I'll take that over the real thing however.

My Dr suggested to wait a month after my 3rd covid dose to get it.

I also had the old live vax 15 years ago but they say it does work as well as this new one.

Thanks for your comments. It’s strange that I have never had a reaction to any vaccination in my life and I have travelled around the world to many remote places and have probably had every vaccine going and then this knocks me for six! Even my 3 Covid had no reaction! Well it’s day 3 now so let’s hope tomorrow is better! Also as you said it’s better than getting shingles!

I've read it's the adjuvant in it that makes the reactions, but I have no reference to confirm. I agree it's the most reaction to any vax I've had. But my brother had shingles, medium case, so I got the vax.

Morning, you should not of had the shingrix vaccine as it's a live one. We must not have live vaccines, were you not told this?

Shingrix is not a live vaccine. Don’t worry I checked and so did my surgery. They had to order it specifically for me as there was a caution notice on my medical file due to my blood cancer.

Shingrix is actually not a live vaccine so it is suitable for us. There is another shingles vaccine however, Zostavax, that’s a live vaccine and therefore not suitable for us

Hope you are well soon. I am waiting for my Shingrix jab -I had decided to wait until after my 3rd covid jab (2 weeks ago)and flu (in 2 weeks). I will heed your experience!

Thank you for your good wishes. It is now day 3 and I’m still unsteady on my feet and have nausea but better than yesterday. I would definitely wait until you have had Covid and flu jabs. In fact my surgery insisted on at least 2 weeks after them. My first Shingrix wasn’t a problem, just the 2nd one. Good luck with yours.
