Booster shots?

Hi all, I’m curious on the consensus regarding a third booster shot given the recent recommendation for the immunosuppressed. Does ET treated with the max interferon dose count, do you think? I am thinking that it is better to err on the side of caution and get one. I would love to hear of any recommendations you have had.

I would say YES to that. I am only taking 45mcg and mu leukocytes are lower now. I will definitely get the booster.

Did you check your antibodies ? They could be still high. In this case you wouldn’t need to hurry too much.

So I did, but it was just a present/not present test and the result was present. Does anyone know of a test for actual levels is available in the US? My hematologist did not seem to think it was.

It’s worth having the serology test if they give you the levels. My anti-S Ab is still at 958. So I suppose I can wait a couple of months before the 3rd shot.

To me the boaster is no different to having the vaccine, I think it’s better to have than to not. I’m on Peg. I’ll have it

If it helps I added some extracts from the UK government’s guidelines,

“The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) interim advice, based on existing evidence, is to offer COVID-19 booster vaccines to the most vulnerable, starting from September 2021.

A booster dose would be offered to groups in 2 stages and, if possible, delivered alongside the annual influenza vaccination.

In the first stage, a booster would be offered to:

adults aged 16 years and over who are immunosuppressed.

those living in residential care homes for older adults.

all adults aged 70 years or over.

adults aged 16 years and over who are considered clinically extremely vulnerable.

It defines clinically extremely vulnerable as:

people with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment.”

The overwhelming advice is - if you are offered it then take it…

thank you for your update.

Does anyone who have PV can share your experienced with Moderna vaccine pls

Sorry I have no experience with moderna myself - I had AZ. Although, it looks like the UK just authorised it for use in 12-17 year olds.

I have PV, diagnosed 4 years ago, and take HU. I had my Moderna vaccines in February with no ill effects except a sore arm. I've been venturing out this summer, shopping and going to the gym, and so far so good. I plan to get a booster as well, gratefully.

I got the booster 10 days ago. Better safe… 😉

Hi, did you get the same make booster as your original jabs? As my wife and I had AZ Oxford jabs, which don't seem as effective as the others from what we read, I am thinking of asking for the moderna or Phizer, also after the AZ jabs we both had clots forming in arms and legs shortly afterwards. And we don't want to have that again.

Hi :) I had received two Astra Zeneca vaccinations in February and March, the booster was Pfizer. I agree with you 100%. Here in Hungary the current choice is Sinopharm and Pfizer for boosters, there was no question about which I wanted. But I did not have to say anything, the doctor checked my health data and gave me a Pfizer. Good luck!

I heard on radio news the UK Govt have ordered x amount (alot!) of Pfizer boosters. I too had leg pains after my initial AZ jab so was pleased to know it wasn't AZ again. Chris

Good I would opt for Pfizer also as had AZ first two. I had few symptoms with my ET prior to my second vaccination and about three weeks after the second dose had all sorts of extra symptoms emerge which have been ongoing ever since.

Just checked it's 60 million doses. Disappointed to read if true that the Pfizer vaccine has gone up by £4 a dose. It's now £22 per dose. Reassuring to know profiteering is not just confined to my household bills but at a global level 😃. . . . .

Paul_1971 profile image

it's hard to not be cynical sometimes, interesting that the not for profit Az vaccine has received the most negative press, makes you wonder why especially as a recent report showed no more adverse effects with Az (clots etc. ) than Pfizer.

Purple478273 profile image
Purple478273 in reply to Paul_1971

The J&J shot is for profit and had similar clot issues based on it being an adenovirus delivery similar to AZ. It had similar media coverage in the states. Not only that but it does not hold up as well against delta.

Purple478273 profile image
Purple478273 in reply to jointpain

Thank you! I am getting Moderna today. There have been some studies that it seems to hold up better against Delta, and that is what I originally had.

Got the booster yesterday - currently on 1,500mg/day of HU (start switch to Peg next month)) - had scheduled an antibodies test but had it cancelled when move was made to open booster availability - was in middle of getting approval from health service to OK booster for ET (as a blood cancer) when decision was made to open to all 50+. Figure why not get it - Local research seems to indicate that the 3rd shot does significantly boost response

I am PV and have the same dose of HU too. Why your doctor want to change to Peg...?

Solyesh profile image
Solyesh in reply to william-Indo

I started off with no problems on HU but as the dosage increased started to experience some side effects (rash; discoloration of nails; breathlessness during intensive cardio (never happened before); fatigue) - I would have probably just tried to deal with the side effects but also while HU initially lowered my platelets form a high of 1,400 to 900 and then mid 700s they weren't getting any closer to the reference/normal range and my specialist was hesitant to continue increase the HU dosage given my personal experience..so we decided to try Peg - hoping it does the job with no or minimal side effects

While I was more than fine with the idea of taking HU (and hopefully for quite some time as I am 52) - I do hope that the Peg might also help with the allele burden and perhaps reduce chance for progression (but unknown...)

I received my booster yesterday, so that makes all three Pfizer. I didn’t take any serology tests and I plan to continues with the mask for the most part. I simply don’t want to take a chance with this. Good luck to you ~ stay well.

I just got result today of antibody test result from Haematology. My request. Shows NO antibodies. I wonder if a booster is worth while if 2 Pfizer didn’t protect me.Fran

Thank you, Fran! Hopefully the third dose will help.

mhos61 profile image
mhos61 in reply to azaelea

Fran, before you get too hung up on that result, I would ask haematology to clarify which antibody test has been carried out.

There are antibody tests that just detect antibodies in response to previous Covid infection which specifically look at IgM and IgG antibody response.

On the other hand, there is an antibody test that specifically looks to see if you have developed antibodies to the Covid spike protein after vaccination. I have had this test done privately which has shown I had a good response, however, I still remain cautious.

azaelea profile image
azaelea in reply to mhos61

Thank you for mentioning this mhos61. I will certainly attempt to find out what the test shows. I didn’t have much faith in the two nurses who took my blood sample. They hadn’t a clue what test they were doing. I’m awaiting a copy which I asked for and if it’s not evident what they looked for I’m on to my Haematology Dr. (If I can get hold of her). It’s been a deputy on last two telephone consultations with 2 months between each time. Fran

mhos61 profile image
mhos61 in reply to azaelea

That’s ok.

I just wouldn’t want you to turn down a booster without an explanation of which antibody test was done.

Hi, both of my hematologists, my local one and my specialist at the cleveland clinic recommended to me to get a booster as soon as they became available. He told me that the antibody tests were not reliable. I plan to get the booster this week. Good luck with your decision.

Purple478273 profile image
Purple478273 in reply to Meatloaf9

Very helpful, thank you! I messaged my specialist and was not thrilled when a nurse wrote back a very generic email that the hospital is not taking a position except to indicate that CDC recommendations should be followed. I am sure that my actual specialist would have good advice, but my next appointment is not for several months.

Going to get my booster shot today. I have ET CALR+, very healthy, but the hydroxy keeps those white blood cell counts low. My hematologist just said, go get the booster. Should be approved for all of us over 60 soon anyway.

I am going to ask my haemotologist next week. I only got my second dose in late May. In Germany we were several months behind the US/UK with vaccinations. My haematologist told not to have AstraZeneca so l had Biontech/Pfizer. Here they seem to be offering a different booster to the original so perhaps l will get Moderna. Will it all ever end or will this be a regular thing ?

Has anyone had J&J vaccine and a different booster? I had some issues 4 days after the shot and they think it was a silent stroke Luckily I am fine now, but I am scared to get booster of J&J. Thank you
