Flu jab

Morning all, I have post PV MF, taking Ruxolitinib, and have been invited for a flu jab for the first time. I've asked both my haematology consultants if it's ok to have with a lowered immune system and they both say to go for it, but I just wondered if anyone has suffered any ill-effects from having it, I'm not sure what to expect. Thanks all x

Hi CT. . . Prior to my BMT I had MF ten yr and never missed flu jab, last thing you need with impaired immune system is a dose of Flu. I was on HU and then Ruxolitinib but had no apparent ill effect. I would advise to have it. Cheers Chris

Yes like Chris i never miss it had for ten years whilst on HU and no ill effects its fine to have with our conditions - and none of us want or need a dose of flu the effects of that would be far worse! All the best Jill

Mine is booked too have had no ill effects .

My hubby is having one too even though he's not quite old enough ..yet!

He was advised to have one in order not to give me flu

Aw he's my hero lol 🏅

as i understand it the flu jab is not a live vaccine so ok for us. by contrast the shingles vaccine is live and so we shouldn't have it.

That makes sense, thanks Jane

I have been having the flu jab for ten years now. Both before MF diagnosis and after. Absolutely no side effects at all. Do have it as flu would be exceptionally awful for you to catch.

Fair enough, I'm having it done tomorrow. Will have a word with hubby about getting it done too!

Hi i had my flu jab last Sat at my gp surgery , all fine no effects. i have had flu jabs for last 3 year ,mainly because of my cardiac risks , but i think its really good to makem sure we have vacination instead of getting bad bout of flu during the winter months , when we have lowered immunity anyway best wishes Holly

Hi just read your post about getting flu jab. I have just been diagnosed with ET jak neg and wondered does this lower your immune system? In march I took a cold which progreased to having laringitis for 3 months. Then in June I ended up with Scarlet Fever. I'm just getting over another cold and laringitis again. Will be seeing my gp in a couple of weeks and was going to ask about the flu jab. I work in a primary school so am exposed to all sorts of bugs and illnesses 😷I'm 44 so wouldn't be offered the flu jab but wondered should I ask for it?

Thanks

Mandy

Hi Mandy, wow you've certainly had a poorly year! I used to work in a high school office and I went down with every bug going until I built up some resistance! I had PV back then and there wasn't any mention of a flu jab throughout the PV years but I progressed to MF last year and started taking Ruxolitinib in January so I'm thinking it was probably the medication that has highlighted my suppressed immune system, or maybe the MF makes it worse, I'm not sure. Anyway, I would certainly have a chat to your consultant about it, especially as you work within the school environment, it might help keep some bugs away. Hope you soon feel better and get some clear guidance regarding the jab. Take care, Christine

Hi Christine . Thanks for responding. Think I will def ask the doc about the jab. I don't know if it's just coincidence that I've had a run of illness or if it's connected to ET. Sorry to hear your condition has progressed. Hope your managing with the meds. Have a lot to learn about mpns. Quite daunting!

All the best Christine
