Last time I wrote I said that I’ve been having some problems with my tonsils since the end of February like tonsil stones, redness, itchiness etc I thought it might’ve been glandular fever so I went to an ears, nose and throat doctor. She thought it may have been glandular fever too so she sent me for a blood test. So I went and got one last Friday and the results came back today. She said I don’t have glandular fever which is good but she said I have an increased white blood cell count which means i have some type of infection that my body is trying to fight off. She said it’s bacterial and that she reckons that it’s strep throat and I may have to get my tonsils removed if it doesn’t get better or keeps coming back. But my main concern is that all the blood tests I’ve gotten done in the last year or so has come back showing I have some type of infection but no further testing has been done. I’m worried it might be something serious if I’ve had an infection in my system for over a year. It also came back saying I’m slightly anemic so would that show up as an infection??
Someone plz tell me what i should do I’m really worried. What if it turns into sepsis or something?? I have really bad health anxiety so that’s not helping me at the moment during all this
Do you reckon I should go for further testing or just leave it?

If you have an infection, that shows up in an increase of white blood cells. On of my childhood health problems was problems with Adenoids and Tonsils, the problem lasted for a long time and my GP deferred treatment and so it has been for fifty years. They can remove tonsils although Adenoids can given time grow back. If you are an adult they prefer to leave these glands alone. They prefer to remove them in Childhood.
Has your GP given you some Antibiotics ?. Has your Doctor suggested further tests or has allowed extra time for the white blood cells time to reduce ?
Thanks for your reply borderriever I have had 2 courses of antibiotics in the last 6 weeks so I don’t really want to go on another lot of them.
I have heard about adenoids growing back but I feel like it’s given me so many problems over the last few month I think the swelling and the feeling of something stuck in the throat are the most Annoying symptoms. Did your tonsil problems end up going away with time? I may think about not removing them if it there’s a chance it might go away on it’s own. The ears, nose and throat doctor said I can come see her in person in 2 weeks time once restrictions ease in Australia to get a swabbing of the mouth done. Also I’m 17 so I don’t know whether I should just leave them or remove them.
At seventeen it is best you get them out now if need be, the older we get the more a problem the operation can be, that is what happened in my case, so they left them in
Sometimes I still have problems although I do not bother my GP , They would not consider removal at seventy years old any way.
If there are problems, take your Specialists advice. See how it goes, attend your appointment in two weeks time they will most probably decide then.
I personally would not leave it to long, antibiotics are becoming less effective and if you get used to certain ones that can reduce their effect if you get any further infections in your life
Yeah I’ll definitely go to my appointment and see what the specialist says. I didn’t really want to go on the second dose of antibiotics a few weeks ago but my gp was pretty adamant about me taking them. I personally hope I’ll be able to get them removed I just want my life back and to stop feeling so sick all the time.
Sounds like her info is correct n she will put u on a med to get rid of the infection in ur body.Tonsils out sounds right too.Id start with the plan she has for ya or ask her more questions.
I just hope she doesn’t put me on another course of antibiotics I’ve already been on 2 courses. And Yeah I honestly hope I’ll be able to get my tonsils out I’m just kinda scared since it’ll be my first surgery I’m worried something will go wrong
Ask questions...As far as surgery..read up on it,educate yourself.Ask if ur tonsils n adenoids r both being removed.Be positive going into surgery.Stay proactive on ur health n ur body.
It sounds to me as though you are asking several questions. Firstly, if you are in England, your tonsils will normally only be removed if you are so badly affected that you are unable to attend school or work several times in a year or if your tonsils are so large that they are affecting your breathing.
The reason why tonsil removal is not carried out routinely as they used to be, is because your tonsils act as the first line of defence against infections. Unpleasant as they are, infected tonsils are rarely dangerous, whereas chest infections for example can be more serious.
It's not unusual for people to have raised white cells which as you say signify that your body is fighting an infection. Sometimes we are not even aware that we have an infection, our bodies fight and resolve the infection.
As for slight anaemia, many women have this, particularly if you have just had a period or your periods are very heavy. Some vegetarians or vegans also have a lack of iron. In most cases you can resolve the low red blood count through diet. If your doctor was concerned she would have prescribed iron tablets, or folic acid.
The bottom line though, is that you will not get any answers from us, you need to talk to your doctor and ask your questions.
