How People Do Function Without Bipolar Meds?

I have bipolar 1 ,and I tried to go off medication a couple of times ,and I got worse straight away. I know there are always trade offs when it comes to bipolar medication ,but I'd much rather be a little bit chubby than having awful mood swings. What's your thoughts.

Hello Ibbi

Thank you for your message. It is difficult when you have a dilemma . It sounds as if you are very positive and are making good progress. You are obviously a very perceptive person.

You could talk with your doctor about the side effects of your medication.

There may be some more information in the topics and pinned posts.

The support and advice from members may be helpful in your situation.

Do take care and keep in touch

Our very best wishes to you

You need to be able to settle your mood swings, therefore medications need to be taken.

Personally I would prefer not to have mood changes where in one instance I am cooking with gas, then next thing I know I am as flat as a pancake. It can be exhausting to not be able settle.

I to suffer with bi polar, I am not sure if it's 1 or 2, I had a manic episode over 25yrs ago, I was hospitalised and given Lithium. Since then I have been ok, I do not see anyone and no one would guess that I was bi polar, I have always worked and looked after my family. My youngest son also has bi polar, this had led to him getting into debt through buying things on the internet obtaining loans etc. Bi polar is truly horrendous and those who suffer are often misunderstood. Getting the right medication is also difficult. Are you saying that medication is attributing to your putting on weight? Also mood swings, I suggest the gym or CBT both help. It has been proven that exercise is beneficial. Hope I have helped, Helen

I'd say these medications are attributing on weight. At a point I got to 131 kg(290 pounds) ,but I managed to lose weight slowly ,but steadly.

Ibbi I agree that medication does attribute to putting on weight, however with certain illnesses you have to keep taking it. Try exercise and CBT xx
