I can't describe how i feel very well but basically I i'll have a period in which I feel happy, I want to make plans for the future and i just basically feel like I can do anything I want but then that is ruined by longer periods of feeling lazy, sad, angry and hateful; I just need to know what the hell is wrong with me.

Hello George, most people's moods vary to some extent. There may be little wrong with you or you could be suffering from some form of depression. There are other conditions that can cause mood swings apart from depression, but depression is by far the most common.
I would start keeping a brief diary of your moods and anything that may have trtiggered a mood change , as the frequency and duration of your moods will help in diagnosing you if there is something wrong and a mood diary will give a much more accurate picture than relying on memory. Often you may not be able to identify any specific trigger, I've never been able to.
There is plenty of information on the internet on the symptoms of depression (try Wikipedia for a start and an overview). Obviously the happy moods are not a problem but if you feel the down moods are interfering with your functioning then you should see your GP and describe absolutely honestly what is happening. My guess is that a GP is likely to diagnose depression without considering other possible causes so ask about other possibilities.
Diagnosis and treatment for depression is not an exact science yet but things are much improved over even 10 years ago. I have bipolar 2 depression which gives similar symptoms to what you describe. It is not exactly like winning the lottery but I have had, overall,a very happy life and a successful professional career. It did at times cause me a lot of painful unhappiness but i gradually learned to get better at coping with it and its certainly far from the end of the world. In fact for much of the time I actually feel I would n't want to be without it but its taken many years to get to that stage and I certainly don't feel like that when depressed.
If you are diagnosed with depression you can pm me and I'll try and give you some short cuts that might help in dealing with it.
