Anxiety
Those first few moments of the day can be incredibly stressful. Sometimes all I want to do is wake up gently, but I've got a cat jumping on my head wanting to be fed, my OCD ten year old freaking out because she thinks we're going to be late, and one thousand thoughts of things I should have done yesterday racing through my head. It's awful and to wake up feeling so panicky doesn't bode well for a good day.
Morning Lucy
Like you I have Pax jumping all over us, He is at least twenty kilos, so he gets the old ticker beating fast, it is like been thrown from a great hight

Anxiety can cause fear which causes a fight or flight response, so your heart races. Your body is flooded with adrenalin, but you are lying in bed so don't use it up. You might get a cold sweat too. This can happen several times during the night. I don't know whether it is because your defenses are down when you sleep so the thoughts you repress during the day can come up to the surface to be processed , or if it is anything to do with blood pressure dropping because you are lying down, but getting up and moving around helped me. You can put the radio on, or go and make some warm milk.
I do think though, that finding ways to suppress the thoughts which cause these feelings can slow down the process of dealing with them.
Of course there is always the possibility you are responding to s real or perceived threat from outside , such as noises in the street. If you are feeling tense you may react more strongly. In this case, getting up to reassure yourself everything is ok may be the only answer.
