Am I depressed or an alcoholic
Hello
Sorry you will need to discuss with your GP.
Hello
Alcoholism and depression are very closely linked. And sometimes it's hard to know whether drinking is making you depressed, or whether having depression is making you want to drink. The easier of the two to measure is the pattern of your alcohol intake. What does that look like for you?

Alcohol is a depressant.
You might have felt sad so started to drink to feel better. The more often you did this the more you were on the way to dependency on alcohol. The sadness would have deepened into depression as alcohol is a depressant. The more times it lifts you up, the deeper the crash down would have felt making you reach for more booze. Its a hard slog to get better but possible.
Probably both.. I have my own demons and I don't know what came first, the chicken or the egg, but I think in my case I think the depression came first and I started self-medicating not to feel..
You might have been doing the same..
Either way, the alcohol will make your depression worse, which will make you want to drink more and it ends
up being a vicious cycle.
You've got a double whammy to tackle, try and reduce the alcohol as much as you can, as long as we're caught
up in addiction it's very unlikely the depression will go away and makes it much harder if not impossible to treat..
Not that I'm a doctor lol, just my experience..
Good luck alanj,
