In my opinion people are not quite realising how many will die,the goverment have said that 20000 dead will be a good outcome and it may be far worse.20000 dead means we will average over 200 dead per day over 3 months.
If 80% of people are going to get the virus thats 50 million people,a 1% death rate would mean 500000 dead.At that level of deaths the public will panic
Your point is excellently made; generally people struggle to interpret numbers and the impact of those numbers.
The projected number you state, which have been put out there by a number of established public health modellers, would overwhelm the majority of health systems but it could be that people hear "1%" and think that is a little number when it translates to hundreds of thousands of people and an overloaded system.
