request a brain MRI scan through my gp

hello,

I had a skull fracture when I was 4 or 5 years old (I fell from the stairs to the basement and landed on glass or metal). I had to remain for a month or 2 in hospital.

I have been suffering from Mental health since I can remember.

I have read that the brain can be damaged following a skull fracture. In fact, 26 years ago, when I was living in Paris, I had a brain scan and the specialist told me that a part of my brain is permanently damaged (he used the word atrophied).

I told this to the mental health community service where I live (Greenock Scotland). They performed a CAT scan at the hospital and they say that they don't see any damage on my brain. However, the cat scan took a few minutes. Whether the scan I went through (I believe it was a MRI scan) took a long time, at least half an hour.

So my question is, can I ask my GP to refer me for an extensive brain MRI scan ?

You will need to get your GP to refer you to a neurologist to get an MRI. I am not sure what you hope to gain from an MRI. If you have atrophy in part of your brain (shrinkage) then there is nothing that can be done to rectify that.
