Oestrogel and utrogestan

Hi, I'm 51, post menopausal for about 5 years. I have IBS which has worsened since I had a hip replacement last year. My GP put me on Oestrogel and utrogestan in May this year in the hope that it would help I use 2 pumps a day and utrogestan vaginally every 2nd day. My stomach is still not behaving, I'm starting to wonder if the utrogestan is irritating my bladder and bowel, anyone else experienced this? I am sleeping better but I don't know if this is due to the hrt or the 20mg amitriptyline I've been on since February.

Hi there, I've just seen your post. I've just started the same HRT regime as you after having issues with HRT in the past. This is my last try to see if it helps with my perimenopausal symptoms. I've had IBS for most of my life so am finding it hard to assess whether or not the Utrogestan is making it worse. I'm certainly very bloated and although I take the pills late at night, they might be causing more fatigue too.

I'm interested to hear that your GP suggested vaginal use of Utrogestan. I take them orally. Are you in the UK? From what I've read, using them vaginally helps to minimise symptoms related to the brain and the stomach as the Progesterone goes to the womb immediately, where it's meant to be!

It wasn't the GP who suggested it, I'm on the menopause matters forum and read it could be used this way. The GP said she'd heard of this and it was fine to go ahead, although it's not licensed for this in the UK, just using the utrogestan every second night. I wanted to avoid anything else going through my digestive system!

That's interesting. Do you know why you only need to take it every other day? I have to take 2 nightly from day 15 to 26.

I feel much like you, my digestive system does not need any more to deal with! I do know that Progesterone is the hormone that causes the most troublesome issues for women.

To answer more of your original question, I don't think that my bladder is affected, as yet anyway. What kind of issues are you experiencing, urgency, perhaps?

I haven't had a period for around 6 years, so I don't take a break with the utrogestan, it's every second day as it gets absorbed better when used vaginally. The bladder thing is weird, sometimes I feel desperate and it's a bit of a disappointment when I go! Like I didn't need as much as I thought I did. Other times I'm fine.

Hi there I also use the Utrogestan pills but wondered if it’s better to insert the utrogestan pills vaginally as I have major sleep problems and maybe this would bypass the digestive system and liver.. therefore be more effective ??Thank you!

You should definitely ask your GP, I didn't want to be swallowing any more pills!
