From now on no one needs ever to worry how slow they run, especially a marathon, I have just read the slowest Marathon was "ran" by a 76 year old Japanese man, at least that was the age he finished the 'run' it took him 54 YEARS, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds in Stockholm Sweden, this was on 20th March 1967 when he ran over the finishing line.

You can read the details at "OZY Slowest marathon" the man got lost, returned to Japan and 54 years later returned to Stockholm to finish the run.

Sort of reminds me of a Sunday walk with our local group. We set off from our meeting place on a fairly long drive to start the walk. One person didn't arrive, we waited a while then set off without him.

Some 8 or 9 months later he turned up on a Wednesday evening walk - instead of meeting us for the walk he had gone to Germany!

We thought he had got seriously lost, but it turned out that he received a call

en-route about a job.

The man got lost, returned back home and went back to Sweden to complete the run 54 years later.

Wow! I’m going to read about it now!

Did you go and spy on your local parkrun?

Edit - ah I understand now 🤣

If only he could have knocked off that last .3 seconds :)

Yes, pity about those 3 seconds, probably cost him a medal

Yes indeed W&S, apparently he got lost running it in Stockholm, went back home to Japan, the organisers did not put him down as DNF, somehow they contacted him after 54 years and asked him to come back to Sweden to complete the marathon 🏃🏾.

You wouldn't take nearly as long as that to complete a marathon if you entered one, not even 54 hours let alone 54 years 😀🏃🏾

No that’s true I haven’t got 54 years left, but an interesting thing

It's also brilliant that you are now recovering from Covid-19, that was a nice slow run you had, well done, I hope you recover 100% before long.

Thanks so much Al. Back out for more slow running tomorrow. Not as slow as our Japanese marathon friend in Sweden though! 🤣

Well, that's another way to avoid hamstring strains, for sure.

I've been influenced by some bad crowd of late. Guys who assume that 75km is 'a formality'. 😉 Joking aside, I've found around 3 months of time where I could seriously train. I'll see if I can run another marathon or at least a bit longer than the last long one. Winter inside has never appealed to me anyway. 😀

I’m still waiting in the café at the end of a Parkrun for Lord Lucan. Might go home.

AlMorr profile image

Who knows, Lord Lucan could appear in a cafe after 54 years but I very much doubt if he will. 😊
