Invitation to run the Brighton Marathon

I just got a invitation to run the Brighton Marathon next April, no way can I run that, if nothing else I have never ran or trained to run any marathon, what surprised me was the price to enter - £69.99, that is surely a very high price to run a marathon.

Oh Al, we'd have made you tea at the end, I don't know about the prices of races but it sounds a lot, you are so fit though I'm sure you could run a marathon

Perhaps a half marathon which as you know I have run, I ran a half marathon on Sunday 27th November in memory of Tim (IannodaTruffe) but I doubt if I could run a full 26 miles marathon.

I'm aiming for a half next year and like you I doubt I could run a marathon

When the organisers close the roads Al, the price is usually higher than for non-closed roads events. I hate to think what I’ve spent over the years on entering races, but it’s not cheap is it?

You are correct Irishprincess, it's not cheap, the week before I ran that Half Marathon in memory of Tim there was a half marathon event in Falkirk, that's about 10 miles from where I live, the price for that HM was £45, as you say it's not cheap.

Yes, HMs are usually around that price…….

I have paid just over £100 for Vancouver HM - partly because the dollar was at an all time low against the pound! But that makes UK races seem cheap, right? I think I get a tshirt and some sponsored gloves, but I'm not sure I wanted those!

That is expensive Linda, by the way I have just completed my 132nd (not) parkrun, my time was 35.03, not my fastest 5K but the first time ever I got negative splits, each kilometer a little faster than the previous, 7.19/7.18/7.10/6.59 and 6.14, I am very pleased about that.

Wow, excellent splits AlMorr

That is expensive. I see you are Falkirk based, I'd look at the Loch Ness one. It's cheaper, and you wouldn't have as far to travel. Also, it starts at the top of a hill. 😊

Thanks Teresa, however, I don't ever intend to run a marathon, perhaps another HM but certainly not a 26 miles marathon. 😊 🏃🏾 👍

I've run a Marathon, but it sure as heck was NOT 'just two half marathons' lol. The 'Wall' is very real and very powerful. I think I wrote in my original report that if it had been possible to call a Cab I would have - though with just three or four miles left an plenty of time to do it in.

I love the idea - and accomplishment - of the distance, but quite honestly the time and intensity of preparing sucks so much joy out of running for me that the 'payoff' really isn't worth it. I admire those who are regular Marathoners, it's a different focus and must be so nice to feel the miles gliding by :)

Yes John, I remember in one of your posts saying that "A marathon is a beast compared to a half marathon", I certainly don't want to put anyone off running a marathon but they must have plenty of time to train and prepare for that run of just over 26 miles.

Marathon may be just a one-off distance but preparing for it is a full time commitment, up to 5 times per week for a bunch of weeks, with dietary tweaks, hydration, rest, focus, discipline, persistence and a lot of fun, if that kind of thing is your idea of fun.

The run itself could be hard, or could be very hard, or painfully hard, or hard to the point that even though you've trained for it you don't make it to the finish. Hence not many people out there have actually run a marathon. But it is still fun! And there is more - when I trained for my 50k run, the marathon was an actual training run, imagine that! 😀
