First 10 miles, and I'm over the moon!

I did my first 10 mile run today, it took me nearly 2h and I am a bag of aches. It had a 302m elevation. The last half-k was a struggle, and I'm not sure if it was a mental thing or not. I'm proud of myself though, it feels as if I can manage that half marathon I'm training for, I wasn't really convinced until today.

I usually run in a loop around the town, but that wouldn't have been far enough and I didn't fancy zigzagging about to make up the distance, so I ran in a straight line halfway to Tunbridge Wells and back. I drive that route about once a month, and last time I made a mental note of how much pavement there was so I knew it would be practical. What I never realised before is that there's a bridge over a river on that road. I felt a bit stupid, I've driven that route for over twenty years without ever noticing a river - to be fair the river is in a steep gorge but I never noticed the gorge either! Apart from that it's not the most interesting route, so I think I'll look for another for my next long run.

I've discovered that the absolute perfect weather for running is light drizzle. It took over 90 minutes for the water to reach into my socks, but for the whole run it was beautifully refreshing and kept me cool.

I have a blister now, it's my first running blister. Also, because I went for a walk yesterday and went shopping in town and then I forgot to bring any of my shoes into the warm, all my shoes are soggy. I think I have a good excuse not to leave the house now until Sunday. And I've probably burned through enough calories to have a good excuse to eat some Nutella straight from the jar. If you disagree on that last point then lalalala I can't hear anything.

Sorry about your blister but a big congratulations to you on running your first 10 miles run, you are the second person today to achieve that wonderful milestone run, I hope you will celebrate that run with a glass of bubbly, once again 🎊 congratulations.

Thanks, I hadn’t though of bubbly but I think it will go well with the Nutella.

Nutella👍

Many many congratulations on an epic run and distance! It's a great achievement and you should feel so proud!! You've done so brilliantly to reach this point! 👏👏👏👏🥇

Vaseline on and in between the toes really helps avoid those blisters. Also the wet weather over a long run has an effect too.

I'd say that's a decent time and a great amount of time on your feet so once again well done and enjoy that Nutella!!!

A fabulous run. I'm so pleased for you 👏👏👏👏👏

Vaseline, I didn’t know that. Thanks, I’ll use some!

Really helps and gives you that confidence ahead of a longer run. Congratulations again

🎉🎉🥇🥇🥇🥳🥳

Nutella from the jar it is! Well done. Sounds like a great run, but I agree, finding 10 mile routes can be difficult. Go and eat!

Congratulations and in less than 2 hours too! I think it takes a lot of mental strength to run in a line out and back, I’d spend the entire time telling my gremlins not to let me turn around early😊

The straight line was because of a worry about mental strength! I knew I could handle the first half but for the last few k I thought if I had a meandering circuit I might be tempted to sneak home early, or at least go for the downhills when I wasn’t due a downhill, so I took away the opportunity for giving up. But I don’t think I could have done a straight line route on some of my previous ‘longest yets’ because I did need a lot of mental safety net at first.

Nutella there's a blast from the past 🙃 I'm off to look for a shop that sells spangles 🥳

Not a blast from the past in this house - the best thing you can put on pancakes I reckon!😁

🎉🎉🎉 Well done!! Running is the best thing to do in the drizzly weather. I am starting to think I should get some Nutella in now...

If the question is whether to buy Nutella the answer is always Yes.

Boo to the blister but whey hey whoop whoop to the 10 miles 🎉🎈🎊💪🙂 Really well done to you.

I’m with you about the temperature, it’s so much nicer running at this time of year than a hot sticky summer’s day IMO.

I hope you enjoyed the Nutella - is the jar empty? 😋😂

Thanks!

I was very restrained, two teaspoons. Except I might have picked up the wrong size of teaspoon - they're the ones about seven inches long, right?

Amazing run, amazing time and amazing choice of after-run treat! Nutella is the best, and spooned straight from the jar is even better. Go you! Get that spoon in! 🎉💥❤️

My last 10 miler used 1065 calories. That is a lot of Nutella!! A guy in front of me at the supermarket on Tuesday bought 27 jars, plus loads of Ferrero Rocher. He paid in fivers!! Does this stuff have qualities of which I am unaware?

Magellan profile image

Nutella is the best, but I didn't manage to get 1065 calories' worth. Husband cooked me calamari for lunch, and that used up a lot of the extra I'd burned. Calamari is also the best. So is Husband :)

Haha! Hope you enjoyed that nutella! Congratulations on an amazing run - that's quite the elevation for your first 10 miler 😲. Rest well and let those shoes dry slowly 😀

I'd forgotten the shoes (again!) so thanks for reminding me. I need them for a nice walk in the countryside tomorrow. We're driving to Sheppey where it's very flat!

Well done on your first 10 mile run, impressive time too given that elevation! You can eat my share of the Nutella though ;)

My town comes with three types of run: hilly with a pavement, hilly without a pavement, or round and round the car park. Every now and then I drive down to the coast to have a flat run, just for a change :)

Cmoi profile image

I'm in the back of beyond, which only features hilly without a pavement! I just checked and my last 10k run was a mere 214m elevation :)

That's steep!

What a great achievement and a great post! Ten miles. So fantastic. Well done. Totally agree with you on the drizzle thing. Best type of weather!

Thanks!

You know how sometimes when you first look at text your eyes pick out words wrongly or mismatch words to make a phrase that isn't there? I saw the word 'drizzle' in your post, and I saw your name, and I read "Lemon drizzle". Now I want cake.

Well done! Hope you enjoyed the Nutella!! 👍🏻🤣

It's definitely a mental thing that last stretch. If you tell yourself it's twice as much as it is, it actually feels a bit easier... yes, our brains can be that easily fooled!

Magellan profile image
MagellanMarathon in reply to GoGo_JoJo

I'll try that next time. Walking past the point at which I felt done in yesterday, it was amazing how little distance there was to go to get home. It may have been a mistake to end with an uphill stretch. Thanks for the suggestion.
