Newbie and first 10 mile run

I have been following this group for a few weeks trying to get ideas for increasing my distance. I have been thinking about the possibility of a half marathon but am not sure as yet. I have been gradually increasing my distance with the aim of running 10 miles either last weekend or this weekend. I happened to see that Runderwear were holding a virtual 10 mile event today. That was it the date was set for the run. I planned my route to finish near to home, it turned out to be a figure of eight route. I had a great time as I had only driven the route before. I was surprised at the gentle incline at some points but why do you not notice these in the car? I even managed a sprint finish at the end. I am really happy with my time of 1 hour 41 mins. I wasn't expecting this time at all. I ran with a friend and we were chatting the entire time so the time seemed to go really fast.

Maybe I will have to entertain the half marathon. As my colleague says it is only a parkrun further!!

Happy running everyone

If you can run 10 miles in 1.41, HM holds no terrors for you. I chose to do a few runs at 10 miles then put in an 18 and a couple of weeks later just set off on a long run which drifted up to an HM. Not the most scientific way of doing it!! I am loosely following roseabi's plan now; building up strength with the distance; much more sensible!!🙂

Thank you

Great running EThomas you're there pretty much, that HM distance is so achievable for you I loosely built my distances up and held those for a few runs, dropping back down to 5k for recovery runs and then went out and did my first HM, you've easily got this 👍

What a great run! Fab distance, fab time. You will have no problem hitting a half marathon- just steadily build up your long run, taking a cut back week once a month to rest your legs a bit. We're starting a spring 2021 half marathon group - if you'd like to join us, just reply in the comments on this post healthunlocked.com/marathon...

E Thomas and the E stands for Epic!!! I know how far you've come and this run is a banger! 💥💥💥💥💥What a run and what a time too. Brilliant achievement. You will undoubtedly be ready for the challenge of a HM. Keep this confidence and belief going forward. Sensational 👏👏👏

Well done, great work. Figure of eight routes are great as you can always turn back at the crossover point if you need to. HM is just an added 5k, you'll be fine 👍🏻😁

You absolutely can do a HM - your 10 miles time is way faster than mine, for a start :) My one and only HM to date was achieved by going out for a long run, having a good day, and simply not stopping!

As this is obviously not a recommended approach, and French lockdown limited my runs for the last four weeks, I've signed up to the Spring HM group to give the distance another proper go.

Fantastic work and you are well set for an HM! I agree running while chatting with a friend makes the time go quicker and sometimes you as well!👏👏👍🏼👊

That is an amazing achievement, well done! 🎉👏👏👏😁 I'm also trying to get to a HM but I'm not anywhere near as ready or as fit as you! Keep at it, you'll definitely get there 👏👏👏💪

Keep plugging away, chipping away at the distance. Mix things up so you don’t get fed up. Good luck 🙂👍
