That's Training Scuppered :(

Apologies for anyone squeamish. I am in the IC with a sodding horse fly bite. Antihistamines not worked, nor anthesan cream so got hydrocortisone cream to try but pharmacist said elevation as well. Does anyone know anything else which works?

Plus can anyone recommend a good repellent as the normal stuff failed.

Tried tea tree oil today for an archery competition which may have worked. Just one bit today.

Thanks in advance,

Nell

Have you tried smidge? It is well rated and smells limey so no rank like some. Although that bite looks bad it's not anywhere that bends so can't see it stopping you once you have an appropriate dressing on it. It doesn't look like your leg has swelled other than the bite site so that is good. I have had them bite the hands and cause them to swell to unusable levels.

Ah, so the pharmacist advice to elevate and rest the leg was incorrect. That's a relief.

On to the run tomorrow morning then :)

Will have to find some Smidge, thank you :)

Ouch :( I find hydrocortisone cream is quite good for insect bites generally (I'm very sensitive to them and always get lots of swelling and itching), but I don't know about horseflies specifically. There are different types of antihistamine; maybe you could try one you haven't yet? I'd take some paracetamol for the pain. You could try icing it - gently though, you don't want an ice burn to add to your woes!

What was the "normal stuff"? DEET?

Thanks, It was Boots brand with DEET.. keeps the boyfriend away but apparently not horse flies. At least the itching has eased :)

Boyfriend repellent - lol!

Glad to hear the itching is going away too!

Lashings of antihistamine cream is what I would use. If it works, tomorrow it will have disappeared. Citronella oil is a simple but great repellant.

I got bitten on Thursday. Still there today... Same size as it was on Friday evening :(

Try to see the nurse at your GP surgery.

ARG! A cleg bite! I'm allergic to deet but by all accounts am delicious to winged biters, and I've yet to find a decent alternative to keep them away—people often talk about Avon Skin So Soft moisturiser being effective but that may be an urban myth, might be worth a go though! I dose up on antihistamines if they snack on me, loratadine seems to help the itching—cetirizine just makes me go to sleep.

I went to the nurse yesterday evening. She promptly discussed lancing it, then decided not to. I am on antibiotics. I had a slightly elevated temperature, blood pressure and pulse was slightly fast. And apparently what I thought was heat making me feel ill on Thursday and Friday after the Thursday evening run was a reaction to the venom.

She then told me about a patient who had a bite like mine, didn't take the antibiotics and ended up seriously ill in hospital. I took the hint and am taking my antibiotics.
