I think you can but I strongly suggest you run it by your doctor. I myself have 2 but I got them prior to knowing I had Lupus. I wanted to get a lupus tat but my dr suggested I didnt because at the time my platelets were low and I had some other lupus issues going on. So check with your Dr. Good luck and good health

There is a website belonging to the American Lupus Society that says it is safe for people with Lupus to be tattooed. In fact there is a gallery of tattoos. My daughter is keen on tattoos and her tattooist is happy to do one for me.

As RhondaB says it would depend on the severity of your Lupus

I have one from before diagnosis and plan on having a butterfly done. i will just take extra care looking after it so it heals ok

my sort if question ;-)

I frequent tattoo studios without any issues - talk to a tattooist they are well educated on what is safe and what is not, if they are unsure they will ask for a GP letter.

I find my Lupus is wonderfull for my tattoos; not being able to be out in the sun with exposed skin makes the colours last so much longer and stay fresh - Not that I would recomend Lupus to treat your tattoos, the side effects are awful!

Hi,

As RhondaB suggests, you should consult with your physician before getting a tattoo. They are the only person that can really advise you. If you get the green light from your doctor, and you are on blood thinners, you'll need to warn the tattoo artist as extra considerations will need to be made.

Hi just thought id comment on this post as I am a lupus sufferer and I also have tattoos I think the previous comments are well founded , please consult your own gp and go with what he advises , but do also wait until you are not flaring even if he gives you the go ahead I got my last tattoo before i was diagnosed and I was fine but I wasnt flaring at the time . take care xxx

Yes, yes & yes. It's more dodgy if u have APS as obviously the bleeding & bruising factor but in all honesty, just because u have lupus, there is no reason u will suffer any differently from some1 who DOESN'T have lupus. I put off having a tattoo as I was always told it was risky 2 have 1 but during a conversation with a Rheumy who specialises in lupus a couple of years back (this was NOT a consultation, merely a chat with some1 I worked with) I was told there was no reason why I couldn't have a tattoo. I, personally was advised not 2 cos of my blood, NOT the lupus.

Last year, taking advantage of the fact that I was taking clexane instead of warfarin 4 a few months, I had my first tattoo :0) I DID warn the tattooist (so he didn't panic & think he'd hit an artery & I was hemorrhaging!) & pleased 2 report, no bruising, minimal bleeding & a bloody fantastic tattoo 2 boot :0)

I have discoid lupus and have multiple piercings, which I got without asking any of my doctors. I’m now thinking of getting a tattoo do I need to ask my doctors?

Thanks
