Never thought of this as a Lupus issue before but ya never know. Does anyone else choke drinking even just water. Always thought it's just me can't drink a brew properly but now wondering if it's another Lupie thing

Swallowing
Can't say I 'choke'. I DO find it quite hard 2 swallow sometimes, but then again I have Sjogrens too & I know it's a problem 4 some of us who have that.
I DO.
Have done for a couple of years now but have always made lite of it cos i didnt wna think that thats how i could `end up`. Being unable to swallow. Sometimes i choke with such force that my nose bleeds or i burst blood vessels in my eyes.
Also some nights i wake up unable to swallow. As hard as i try i just seem to have forgotten how to swallow and it feels as if i have a thick mucussy film over my throat, stopping me swallowing saliva. Its quite frightening..
I'm having a scan on sunday because of this, i don't get nose bleeds, but i do experience the feeling, like you say "feeling as if i have a think muscus film" i have alway got swollen glands, doctors thinks its this, but having scan to rule out anything sinister, i get quite panicky too, Bloody Lupus is so complex isn't it?
For years now i've found it hard to swallow food sometimes. It gets stuck in my gullet. I'm never sure if it's the Lupus or the drugs that are causing it.
I choke regularly whilst drinking water or eating. Never really thought about it though. X
DaleDiva, have you been checked for Sjogren's?
I do and get frightened and this makes it worse...have mentioned it but no-one seemed all that interested....but means I avoid eating out or with other people and avoid certain food so has affected my life a lot.....also live alone so scares me that could choke and no-one know. I drink loads of squash and always drink with food to help it down. It's horrid.
I would mention this to your Rheumy so he can send you to see a Gastroentrologist. Food and sometimes drink get stuck in my gullet and then I vomit. The lupus has weakened the muscles in my gullet.
I do have Sjogrens but it is not a problem with dryness it is as if the timing of my swallowing is wrong and I feel as if the fluid is "going down the wrong way"
For the dryness my rheumy said to chew gum as it stimulates saliva production in preference to drinking water
I am slow replying to this but just did a search around choking because I was going to post to ask your same question. I have Sjogrens too and literally feel like I'm choking (like the feeling when fluid goes down the wrong way but without food involved) very often, and frequently at night while I'm sleeping, which is very scary. It comes and goes in frequency like all my symptoms do but seems very bad at the moment. Interesting to see I'm not along! I don't feel like it's dryness either but maybe it's related?
