I take Methotrexate is there an alternative I can take which will allow me to drink alcohol?

hi - you should discuss alcohol with GP or rheumatologist if you haven't already. both of mine said it's fine to drink in moderation while on MTX and I have and liver tests have always been fine! Obviously not good to go overboard, but keeping within limits seems to be fine for me...

you should ask one of the reasons they say dont doing id methotrexate is metabolism in the liver. if you can find an immunosurpressant that is metabolised by the kidney this should allow you to drink.

sorry i dont know if any are but know thats why they dont like you to drip.k on methotrexate. alcohol may affect how much of theory is in yours system and not just change your liver results if you have to much in your blood because of a heavy night out you can drop your blood counts.

Thanks for this. It is just that sometimes it would be nice to have a glass of wine with friends, a small way of making you feel "normal".

a small glass occasionally probably won't make a big difference. and anything allows use to feel normal is important. but best to check with your drs will also. they know what your base line blood tests are and if there is any change can advise you to stop. it also depends what dose of the drug your on. other meds your on. good luck

I've been advised that alcohol in moderation is safe from several sources . I completely agree with your comment about wanting to do something that allows you to feel normal as lupus drastically changes out lifestyle . I've gone from being an extremely fit , very sporty person to struggling to dress myself and having to walk Roth a stick within a matter of months . So I'd say go with wot makes you happy and do wot you can when you can in moderation . Make the most of life .. Raise a glass 4 the rest of us luppies !! Cheers

I take MTX and drink, probably more than I should....but not on a Wednesday. Keeps me feeling I have a life.

I am first going to tell you what happened to me! I don't judge people I think that is up to God. But it took a very very very long time to find out that I had Lupus, I used alcohol to help me feel better! I could not stand the pain and I felt like I was loosing my mind! But when they found out I had Lupus I had to go on Plaquenil a high dose and a very high dose of steroids! I had never taken steroids before! And I used the alcohol for the steroids. and it turned out I had steroid pshycosis. It will be 2 years January 18 and I have not had a drop of alcohol! THe alcohol even made my Lupus worse. I just had to share that with you. But to answer your question about drinking with a drug that wont hurt you, I know MTX. they told me no way! the funny thing is right now I could drinki alcohol as far as my meds go! But I crossed the line and I dont want to do that! I do know people who our on lots of drugs and still drink, And they are fine maybe your or one of those people! Just remember lupus is such a lonley illness it drives you to drink(again my own thinking) I hope you have alot of support and I am right now looking at what someone wrote 3 days ago and she drinks on MTX. I am from the USA. I dont know really how I got on this support group, But I seem to like you all better, LOL Maybe I will move to your country!!! Love ya, Krisdy
