You should really ask your dentist. I can’t see the reason why not but I’m not a doctor, the only thing I could comment on is if you lose a tooth and you have gum problems, you may need a bone graft as well. My hubby had to have this done, it’s a wee bit more expensive but doable and he has never had a problem.
I had a consultation with an oral surgeon two weeks ago regarding a tooth removal and he said that implants take longer to heal on people who are immunosuppressed, which of course is often the case with lupus treatment.
Hi daffodill2,
I feel your pain as I have been through that. as a lupus sufferer. Comments so far are correct as it does take longer to heal and I also had to have a bone graft and they do say there’s no guarantee that’ll work out! However I’m pleased to say I have 3 implants and all are okay, I did have my treatment done by a specialist periodontist as against just a regular implant surgeon. Good luck and do speak to your dentist.
Hi Tilcara Sorry to hear your having problems with your mouth, I also have had a lot of problems due to lupus have also lost a few teeth and also thought about implants but the cost is high that didn't bother me so much but its the healing time us lupies lol don't heal well, I know we are all different but I personally don't heal myself very well, but you must do what feels what is best for you I will say I had a biopsy on my gums a few years ago and wish I never had, had it done nothing but problems and pain ever since. You know your own body and how you heal good luck on your journey if you decide to go ahead 😘 x
I have just had my first implant with no issues at all. I am on hydroxychloroquine and gabapentin and have Sjogrens syndrome as well as lupus. I was fed up with sore gums where gaps are and hopefully this will help as food won't rub my gums inside the hole anymore. I am going for my next one soon which will need a bone graft so I'm hoping that goes as smoothly. There are about four appointments per tooth spread over many months but the first one where he inserted the titanium holder went like a breeze with no infection after. Only took half an hour and didn't give me any pain at all. I would say choose your implant surgeon well. Mine teaches at Bristol Hospital as well as having a dental practice. You need the best hands you can find not just anyone who says they do implants. My first back tooth cost £1350 and the bone graft back tooth will cost about £2300 its not cheap but I'm going for one a year and hoping more than that don't fall out per year than I can replace😆 I'm missing three and two wobblers may not last! If you go for it they ct scan your mouth first to see if there's enough bone to drill in to. Once they insert the tooth holder then you have about 8 weeks to see if that is ok with no infection before they recheck and proceed with the tooth itself. So far, best thing I ever did as not being able to chew properly and dentures at 52 was not my idea of fun.
I went to high street dental in Chippenham. Gerry Davies was the dentist he teaches orthodontics at Bristol hospital. He sent me to cirencester dental practice for the ct scan as they don't have one. But once your jaws have been scanned once I should think you don't need it again but that cost extra.
Hi daffodil2, I have a current diagnosis of Undifferentiated connective tissue disease with Lupus like features (positive Ana and anti dsDna) and take Hydroxyqloroquine.
I also have had dental implants with Gerry Davies at The High Street Dental Practice and had the same care as dg70 above with no problems at all. I love my implants and would have really struggled without them.
