Renal biopsy reaction

Hi Everyone,

I have lupus nephritis and had a renal biopsy some 12 days ago, to investigate possible increase in lupus activity. I have since developed a new, persistent middle back ache, which radiates round to the hips. I had blood and urine tests some five days ago, but they indicated nothing unusual. The backache is not screaming agony, but it's pretty uncomfortable and I am generally washed out and stomach achy; but that was all around before the biopsy.

I shall contact my lupus nurse on Monday, but I was wondering what other people's experience of the after effects of biopsy might be?

Hmmm, I don’t remember feeling much pain at all after biopsy, or especially unwell - but perhaps in the context of being generally pretty ill at the time I didn’t put anything down to the aftermath of the biopsy in particular. But the pain you describe does not sound ‘normal’ to me. I hope you are taken seriously when you report it.

Hi Neriah. How long did your pain last? I've had kidney biopsy for 6 days now and I do still feel the persisting pain on my left abdomen and I can't raise my left leg like normal. Was wondering if you felt the same too.

It took a good fortnight I'd say and even then I felt shocked and kind of insulted (as if you can have an insulted kidney)! The first biopsy I had a few years ago was not so bad. This I suspect was because I was in hospital at the time and therefore was in bed afterwards being looked afterwards, whereas this time I was in in and out as a day patient and therefore inevitably jumping around the next day, trying to pretend nothing had happened. What fools we mortals be. I didn't have any leg issues though. I hope that improves for you and obviously if it doesn't contact someone relevant about it. Otherwise, perhaps give it a little more time?

Thank you for getting back to me. If anything, I think my biops-ied kidney is being very dramatic. Thank you for giving me a time range. At least I know I'm not being too dramatic. I hope things will get back to normal for me after two weeks. Hope you're all well and thriving now. Take care. xx
