Skin Biopsy

Hi, had a punch skin biopsy done on my arm few months ago and it says “direct immunoflourescence shows granular deposition of IgM at the dermo-epidermal junction, together with fibrinogen in occasional dermal vessels”. Says is non diagnostic but suggests connective tissue disease.

Just wondering has anyone had anything the same? If so were you given any further tests from this or indication of which disease it could be??

Hope everyone has a pleasant day today 🤗

Thanks xx

I had two skin biopsies done in March, one skin buncha nd an elliptical. The appt for the results was cancelled (which I was very relieved!) and the consultant called me instead. All she sai over the phone was negative for lupus and the other biopsy was inconclusive.

How did you get specific results like you have? I have had no letter, just the phonecall and she said she'll make an appt for (hopefully) a face two face in August - obviously dependant on whatever the situation is then.

Have you phoned the dermatology department to ask them to explain what it all means?

Hi thanks for responding was told exactly what was put above, hence why just wanted to see if anyone could help. Wondered if someone had same response. I was sent a report which reported above. If nothing seen maybe they don’t send out??

Appreciate you coming back to me. Hope you get answers.

Commonly seen in cutaneous lupus although not diagnostic. A band of antibodies seen between dermis and epidermis was commonly called positive lupus band test. Biopsy results should be taken into account when assessing full clinical picture to make a formal diagnosis. The biopsy results won’t clench a diagnosis alone without other data to support it eg blood tests, imaging, symptoms. Hopefully, they’ve sent off an ANA at least.

Hope this helps answer your question. ❤️

This is very interesting as I am still waiting to see a dermatologist and have been diagnosed with a vasculitis syndrome without having a skin biopsy, which is not best practice. If you are already on medications, such as hydroxychloroquine, when you have a skin biopsy, will this prejudice an accurate test result? Just wondering as many of us may have had such biopsies while on treatment.

Thank you for your reply. I'd been led to believe by one doctor that if I start the drug now, we might not be able to get an accurate skin biopsy (I don't have an appointment until August in dermatology because of the long waiting list!)
