If a lupus nephritis patient is administered live polio vaccine what will be the effect? Will it cause poliomyelitis as well? Patient is currently on high dose cellcept and prednisone

Hello

As far as I am aware, lupus patients are not advised to have any live vaccine. It’s too dangerous for us.

Have you asked your medical team about this?

Wendy

Hi. Do you know if live vaccines are advised against for people on immunosuppressant drugs with Lupus - or for people with Lupus per se? Thanks

As far as I know, (remember I’m not medically trained, just a fellow lupus patient) we shouldn’t have live vaccines whether we’re on immune suppressant medication or not. Our immune systems don’t behave how they should and live vaccines might provoke a nasty response. BUT like with everything else, you should check the LUPUS UK website and speak to your doctor. Best wishes x

Thank you for replying, Wendy. I ask because I was given a live vaccine for Yellow Fever some years ago and I seemed to produce a low-grade version of the disease. I haven't been Dx'd with Lupus, but it did seem strange that I became so poorly at the time.

It looks like there is a killed polio vaccine. You might want to ask your doctors about it. Live vaccines are usually advised against.

I've always been given priority to flu vaccines ( dunno wether they're live ) but I've always understood this to be important as I'm immuno suppressed - along with autoimmune cells not exactly doing what theyre meant to. This year I was given early priority to a new strain of flu vax that was in short supply.....Its always been an important annual necessity.

Flu vaccines are not live, so good that you get it, Freckle. Yes, when there is a shortage you would be on the priority list because of risk of flu complications.

Polio vaccine is given as a combination vaccine in a diptheria/tetanus and polio vaccine all in one these days and is not a live vaccine.

I’m on mycophenolate and everything I read tells you not to have vaccinations while taking it. I would contact the lupus clinic and ask their advice just to be on the safe side. Xx

I forgot to mention that the flu vaccine is advised though. Meg x
