If I lay on my sides I wake up with crippling hip and knee pain, lay on my front I get crippling pain around my waist and if I try to sleep on my back I have difficulty swollowing and just feel dreadfully uncomfortable 🙄
So I’m sitting here thinking maybe it’s the mattress and if any of you lovely lot have had to change mattress and if so what type did you go for?
I can’t see much point in going to shops and trying some out as I doubt they will allow me to lay on it for a few hours 😂

I had a fantastic pure latex mattress from Dunlopillo for many years; it really helped with my bad back and I regard it as one of my best ever buys, even though it was expensive. Eventually it crumbled to bits and I couldn't afford to replace it, but if money was no object, I would definitely go for an organic latex mattress. x
Hi Lisalou, Yes you sound exactly like me! I’ve just bought a memory foam mattress from Ikea and a Dorma memory foam topper and like whaleroad said it’s like sleeping on marshmallow yet it supports without hurting , I love it and I’d never go back to a sprung mattress!
Thank you Well I reckoned being that I’m always in a daze and spend a lot of time under my duvet it made perfect sense😂😴
As for the mattress it’s says it’s medium firm but the memory foam sort of moulds to your body but supports too and the topper gives it that extra comfort. I toyed with just getting the topper and I think that would’ve made a big difference to the sprung mattress in fact I do also have a single memory foam topper on the spare bed and I take it with me when I stay at my daughters as if a bed is too hard I’m in agony after 20 minutes or so and too soft is the same. I’d highly recommended memory foam👍 x
I did notice earlier they do one that is meant to keep you cool also, mostly some sort of gimmicks!!! I’ve got to that point where I’m sick of having to hold on to something just to get out of bed, the support stops all these aches and pain from making me collapse in a heap !!!!
I’m kind of waiting for that moment like grandpa jo In Charlie and the chocolate factory when he jumps out of bed and starts dancing 😂x
I would say that memory foam can be warm but the topper I’ve got has some sort of cooling thing or moisture absorbing something or other and I don’t find it hot, that is inbetween my hot flushes 🥵! and I only need a summer duvet with it. x
I had a couple of nights on a memory foam topper atop a very firm mattress when visiting my 82-year-old aunt (how embarrassing, she's more capable than me!)...BLISS...'a marshmallow that loves you' just sums it up! Thanks whaleroad! 🤗 🤩
Read from PMRpro today that early waking with back stiffness/pain can mean other things too - I have a nearly fifty-y.o. back injury that could be something inflammatory now - so I'm VERY VERY grateful to you for bringing this up and for PMR for giving me the uh-o! 😗 xxx
We will be moving soon and have seen a wonderful mattress that I would love to invest in (it’s a wee bit pricey). Basically, each person has two memory foam squares each (width) and four for length. You can unzip the cotton part of the mattress and rearrange these squares that come in a range of squishy to firm. The company gives you recommendations on what combination for certain ailments like back pain, hip pain etc. But it means that, for me, when every day is a different pain, I can switch it up however I want. It also means my husband can have whatever combo he wants too! You can like two of each firmness (I think). It seems like quite a good idea and I believe it’s a 30 day money back gaurentee if you don’t get along with it. Like I said, I haven’t purchased it yet so this may not be any use to you but in theory I think it sounds amazing 😍🤤 have a wonderful day lovely 💖🌟
Yes, this was happening to me. I did have very bad hip issues and was waiting for surgery, but my sleep was being seriously effected by our mattress. It was painful however I slept and my back and hips were awful in the morning and I was getting over tired and grumpy. Our mattress was due to be replaced anyway but I persuaded my husband to go for a memory foam mattress. It was expensive, so we did it on an interest free agreement and paid it off monthly over 2 or 3 years, I can't remember now. It was very worth it! It is such a good mattress. Took us both a while to get used to it, after a traditional mattress but neither of us would go back now. In fact our children love our mattress too and are always asking if they can have memory foam too.
I think we got ours in Dreams. But they aren't around any more. Argos are good for this type of thing. We just gave in and ordered our daughter one on Wayfair and got a very good deal. But research them first. Some are listed as foam but when you dig more deeply in the descriptions they are coil spring with only a foam topper.
As a quick work around to see if a mattress topper would help you, try this..... Get your spare duvet out of the drawer, fold it in two and place on top of your bottom sheet. You sleep on top of it without its cover. If it helps your problem then a mattress topper would be beneficial to you. The choice then is a soft one or a harder one? The textured one tend to be more supportive.
Hi Lisalou, I go along with all the other responses here about getting a decent mattress for a good night’s sleep - I suffer from a really painful spine, hips and pelvis and recently got a memory foam mattress from online store “Emma-mattress”. It was half price in a sale, so felt we got good value for the money spent. You can try the mattress out and get them to collect it if you don’t like it. I am a bit like the princess and the pea and am really sensitive to feeling everything - so we have a lovely marshmallow-mattress topper and then on my side I have another single-bed topper on top of that! Hope you find something suitable that works for you xx
Hi Lisalou19, I haven't got lupus, I have other chronic back and leg pain. I invested in a new mattress and it helped me sleep. 10 years down the line I have invested in another good quality mattres and I'm hoping that this one is good as the last. Good luck with every thing.
I’m still looking for my health answers. But just started medication for a rheumatic disease. Either way I wont be leaving this page, the people are too nice 😎
Hi, I bought a new mattress last year. I only had it 2 weeks when I realised I had made a mistake buying it. It had small buttons and these pressed into my hips etc causing a burning pain. I went back to the shop where they agreed to change it !! Apparently it is part of returning goods. I did spend a little more than expected but it was worth it. I was advised to stay away from memory foam due to night sweats being made worse. Unsure how true as didn't buy memory foam. Good luck with your search
